Rolled into Prince Rupert (BC) this evening in time to check in o my hosts' very cushy B&B. I'd thought this was to be a "hostel" experience but so far it's turning out much nicer - a private room with private bath, and access to the kitchen as desired. I enjoyed a banana and peanut butte sandwich for dinner tonight - simple pleasures last experienced before I left home for a month on the road!
Some random notes from the last two days:
Saturday:
- It was supposed to be a short day of riding - only half the mileage - but I spent most of the day trying to correct my PIN number. I'll spare the details but after three hours on the p[hone with the credit card company, the ATM swallowed my card anyway. Now I have to wait until Wednesday for a new card to arrive. What a nightmare.
- But I found a wonderful campground in Houston, BC - the Shady Rest RV park, where operator Cathy set me up in a really nice spot complete with soft grass on which to pitch my little tent (usually it's gravel hereabouts). I slept well without even inflating my air mattress, while wolves howled in the distance.
- My camping neighbor, Ken, arrived on a new CanAm and shared a campfire with me where we exchanged stories of the road. Ken is well into his seventies and expects to ride the CanAm for another decade before giving it up. I hope he does!
- My rear tire is shot already - only 3,000 miles and a week after mounting it. The next few days will be occupied with remedying this problem so I can keep moving forward without missing the timetable.
Sunday:
- Began today with Mass at St. Anthony's in Houston. This has to be the smallest parish I've ever experienced. Only about 15 (including me and the priest) were in attendance.
- I got some fantastic handlebar photos of the scenic ride over to Prince Rupert (once beyond Terrace), but they are on the camera that doesn't have a download cable. I looked again for one at Walmart today, but to no avail. I wonder if I can simply insert the memory card into my PC to capture the pics. I'll experiment with that tonight and see.
Tomorrow will be busy, with laundry, bike cleaning, and other things to get ready for the ferry passage on Tuesday AM.
