Use of Implementation Cycle
The purpose of the Counseling Advisory Council Committee is to assure that a Comprehensive School Counseling Program is in place to meet the needs of the campus and to review the effectiveness of programming implemented campus-wide. Committee members volunteer to participate each year, with one representative selected from each grade level, one parent from the community, and at least one student. The Parent Climate Survey and the Student Climate Survey are used to establish current goals for Social-Emotional Learning and guide and evaluate the Comprehensive Counseling Program.
At the first meeting of the year, the school counselor presented the Counseling Scope and Sequence, topics for scheduled lessons, and the focus of small group counseling. The counselor also explained Tier 2 and 3 counseling supports. This included explaining the process for referring students in need to the McAllen ISD Family Treatment Program.
At the beginning of the school year, all teachers were asked to complete a Campus Needs Assessment. This provided feedback to the counselor with other topics teachers and staff felt would be beneficial for students. The Counselor Advisory Committee met to review the needs assessment. Based on this data, it was determined that an area of growth was to improve the use of self-regulation techniques among students in PK-5th grade. After determining the area of need, lessons were created that would focus on calming, regulation, and mindfulness skills. These lessons were taught during regularly scheduled core counseling lessons.
