Definition: McAllen ISD Professional School Counselors align their services with both the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling and the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) standards. Our program is focused on three key areas of student growth: academic development, career development, and social-emotional well-being. By using data-driven approaches, we identify student needs, deliver impactful guidance lessons, provide individual and group counseling sessions, and implement targeted interventions to close academic and systemic gaps. Our counselors lead a campus-wide emotional intelligence initiative that develops self-regulation, self-awareness, empathy, motivation, and social skills. We also engage with parents through a Weekly Family Connection activity, fostering a shared learning experience around the core components of emotional intelligence.
Rationale: We believe that every student in McAllen ISD deserves equitable access to high-quality education within a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment. Our approach is founded on the belief that all Grizzlies can achieve success when positive relationships are cultivated by all stakeholders in a nurturing and accepting setting. We are committed to creating an educational atmosphere where every student feels valued and motivated to reach their academic and personal goals.

Developing Program Goals
The goals of our school counseling program are shaped by a comprehensive review of diverse data sources. At the start of each school year, counselors and administrators analyze key campus data points, including climate surveys from parents, students, and staff, teacher needs assessments, the Campus Improvement Plan (CIP), standardized test scores, the TEA Campus Report Card, input from the Counselors Advisory Council, and stakeholder feedback. This analysis identifies focus areas where the counseling program can make a significant impact, guiding the creation of SMART goals aimed at driving continuous improvement throughout the year. Collaboration with the McAllen ISD Core Counseling Team also plays a crucial role in developing our pacing guide and planning resources for the school year.
Evaluating our Program Goals
Our counseling program undergoes continuous evaluation to ensure alignment with student and campus needs. SMART goals are regularly reassessed using mid-year student surveys, attendance records, discipline referrals, and feedback from pre/post-surveys completed by students, parents, and teachers. Meetings with the Counseling Advisory Committee provide additional insights into the effectiveness of our interventions and help refine strategies for maximum impact. This dynamic process ensures that our counseling services are responsive and adaptive, always evolving to meet the changing needs of our Grizzlies and community.
