When we are asked to Evaluate something, the text we are producing is an Evaluation. In an Evaluation, we are being asked to assess an idea, process, object or event against a particular standard. For example your teacher may ask you to evaluate how you improved your music production skills? To this you would need to first gather all your evidence, then assess how strong the evidence is, and then make decision based what you think.
In an Evaluation we would expect that the language you use is:
Formal - no slang or conversational language
Evaluative Language such as
Stong, Weak, Demonstrates, Highlights, Implies
Is written in the Past Tense
The Structure of an Evaluation
State purpose to be evaluated including criteria for evaluation
Present evidence
Explain the impact of evidence
Draw conclusion with reference to task purpose (judge)
Music production is the development, creation, refinement and presentation of music for public presentation. I have been developing my music production skills by researching music production, and learning how to use Music production software and equipment.
To begin developing my Music production skills I read ‘Digital Audio Workstation’ by Colby N Leider. I found this book useful for understanding how DAWs can be used for all stages of music production, but felt limited because I am only able to apply some of my learning at this stage of my learning. I practised what I learnt about DAWs (Digital Audio Workstation) by developing my skills using the Ableton Live DAW software. I spent some time understanding the interface (see photo) and practised recording some sounds. Combining the reading I did earlier with practice learning the DAW interface I was able to create and record elements of a musical piece.
Throughout this process I learnt that I need to practice practical DAW skills at the same time as learning the theory and vocabulary of Music production. I can see that reading too far ahead of my own skill development, without practising at the same time, limited by understanding of the text, music terms and technical skills.
