When we are asked to examine something in detail and show our understanding of it, the text we create is an Analysis.
An analysis will typically break down a text, or creative work into its component parts and then try and make meaning as to how each of those elements fit together to make a whole.
Language will be formal, no conversational language
Will include technical or subject specific language
Often include vocab like component, element, aspect, relationship, factor, section
Introduce the purpose of the Analysis
Describe the component parts of the work to be analysed
Discuss meaning from the evidence presented
Draw conclusions
Echo II, Christian Thompson, 2014
Echo II is a photographic artwork made by the Bidjara artist Christian Thompson. It was produced as part of the Polari series in 2014. The photograph shows the artist covered in white body paint with feathers in his hair. Thompson is shown shirtless from the chest up. The background is a pale flat grey with no details or shadows.
The centre of interest is the artist's eyes. The artist uses the white face paint to contrast with the dark colour of his eyes to draw the viewer into the image. Thompson also centres the eyes in the middle of the composition. His face is framed by feathers, light fluffy feathers down the sides of his hair, and darker feathers poke up from the crown of his hair.
This artwork is about the artist's relationship with identity and culture. His choice of colours reflects his identity in connection to his aboriginal and anglo heritages. He is using ceremonial materials such as feathers and body paint for adornment in a way that both show his cultural identity. These same materials obscures the artist’s skin and hair through ‘whitewashing’ his skin against the blank, plain coloured background.
Christian Thompson’s Echo II is a striking artwork that discusses mixed identity in western society. It’s focus on the artist’s personal experience and thoughtful use of materials in the photos staging work to create an artwork that is meaningful and striking.
