Expertise in Learning

Goal: All MAUSD students will achieve academic excellence in an innovative and flexible learning environment.

Objective #1:

All MAUSD students engage in personalized and rigorous learning opportunities.

Objective #2:

All MAUSD students experience an aligned, proficiency-based curriculum with varied assessments that measure and monitor their individual growth and outcomes.

The Work

MAUSD faculty and staff are currently engaged in the rigorous work of implementing Expertise in Learning objective #2. The faculty and staff at Mt. Abraham Union Middle/High School are refining their proficiency-based curricula by content area team. Middle and high school work also includes a renewed focus on transferable skills through our advisory system and through work on students' Personalized Learning Plans (PLPs).

Our elementary school faculty and staff are building the framework of mathematics and literacy curricula, writing learning targets and creating shared learning scales. The shared learning scales will drive instruction and assessment that is aligned to our district's proficiency-based graduation requirements in core academic areas.

Our students will benefit from this work in many ways. An aligned curriculum ensures students at different elementary schools are learning the same academic skills, which will prepare them not only to move on to subsequent grade levels, but also to come together with their 5-town peers for seventh grade at MAUMHS. It will allow our teachers to focus on the most important academic content and provides the tools for measuring student growth and outcomes. And, it allows us to guarantee our students and their families we are providing the highest-quality education possible.

MAUSD's Proficiency-based System

MAUSD continues to build and refine our Proficiency-based System. We have articulated our proficiency-based graduation requirements (PBGRs) which outline the content and transferable skills that all students will work towards. The Program of Studies details educational pathways and opportunities available to our students at the high school. The school profile is a tool used to communicate our system with colleges and universities.
