Section 3: Professional Learning


To enter Professional Learning, herein referred to as PL:

  • Go to the menu on left of home screen and select PL Activities at bottom. Enter professional learning PL activities (once again by clicking on the Add option to the right of that window) that connect to your content area (must be 1/3 of your required credit hours) and to at least one other Core Teaching Standard.

  • Only check the endorsement box if the activity is specific to meeting your endorsement requirement.

  • Fill in all other boxes as required.

  • Enter PL as hours, not credits - 1 credit = 15 relicensing hours

  • The activity description only needs to be an overview. You do not need to write an in-depth description.

  • Scan and upload the PL evidence of completion (transcript, certificate of participation, etc.) for

each activity being submitted (many formats accepted).

  • PLEASE enter only the amount of PL needed to meet the renewal requirements for your license level. The LSB does not need to see all of the PL you have undertaken in the past 7 years.

  • Enter Actual or Expected Impact: Use “I” statements.

AOE REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTERING Professional Learning

Teacher guidelines for entering PL:

  • Concise description statements that include:

1) The content and/or objectives of the learning activities (May use

syllabus or activity description provided.)

2) The related knowledge/performance standards if you are using this

activity to meet your endorsement-specific (content) hours.

  • A brief Expected or Actual Impact using “I” statements to address (samples below):

1) How did this activity result in new learning for you?

2) How will this new learning enhance your instruction/practice?

3) How does this new learning translate for improved outcomes for students?

Administrator guidelines for entering PL:

  • Concise description statements that include:

1) Content of course/workshop

2) Connection to leadership standards

3) Why is this Professional Learning activity important?

  • A brief Expected or Actual Impact Statement using “I” statements to address all of the following questions (samples below):

1) What was your new learning?

2) How would this new learning influence your skills as a leader?

3) How would you expect this new learning to improve outcomes for teachers and students?

REMINDER: Check the Related Endorsement box ONLY IF the particular PL you’re entering will be used to meet the 1/3 requirement (1/3 of your total PL hrs. must be specific to the endorsement you’re renewing).

SAMPLE 1 - CR teacher

Activity Name: AP US GOV & POL COURSE


Description: AP US GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS COURSE OFFERED BY THE COLLEGE BOARD AP INSTITUTE AT ST. JOHNSBURY ACADEMY THROUGH SO. NEW HAMPSHIRE UNIVERSITY.


Actual or Expected Impact:

  1. I will use this new learning to increase the rigor in the semester-long civics course I teach.

  2. I am already enhancing my instruction/practice by substantially revising and delivering a more rigorous and relevant curriculum for my students.

  3. I am setting higher expectations for students learning about US government and politics with the appropriate approaches and supports to ensure that students grasp the content and concepts presented.

SAMPLE 2 - Technology for academic support

Activity Name: Dynamic Landscapes 2018 Authentic Student Voice


Description: Teachers, administrators, librarians, and technology coordinators will connect, collaborate, and immerse themselves in new technology, igniting and growing their passion for teaching and learning.


Actual or Expected Impact:

  1. I learned about new tech tools specially designed for education and greater student engagement.

  2. I designed and taught PD lessons to teachers on the impact and use of particular tech tools within their classrooms.

  3. I was able to help students and teachers use tech tools within their classrooms promoting wider student engagement.

Sample 3 - Nurse

Activity Name: DITEP Drug Impairment Training for Educational Professionals


Description: This two day training provided information for the nursing department to become educated on recognizing drug impairment in our school setting.


Actual or Expected Impact:

I learned to recognize drug impairment in our facility and how to conduct a thorough assessment screening and understand how to document our data information.

I learned that there are references and much information in our school system that assist us in identifying issues around substance abuse.

I will continue to have discussions with our students about substance, drug impairment and legal consequences, available resources for themselves, friends and family members.

Sample 4 - Guidance Counsellor

Activity Name: Cultural Competency Specialist


Description:

Learn how you can foster increased awareness, understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity in the school community through culturally responsive school counseling.


Actual or Expected Impacts:

1. I am able to recognize and explain the importance of multicultural education and awareness within our public school setting.

2. I learned a variety of ways to foster an inclusive, equitable school climate and effectively support our diverse student population in my role as school counselor.

3. I have been able to utilize the tools from this course in my role on the Diversity and Equity committee and share my learning with my colleagues.

Sample 5 - Principal

Activity Name: Secondary Scheduling Strategies


Description: District Management Group is putting on two professional development sessions that will support district and school leadership teams in designing and creating new master schedules based on best practices.


Expected or Actual Impact:

I learned how our new unified school district with its shared staff and funding will have an impact on setting future scheduling priorities for our high school. As part of this workshop and team discussions, I was able to start making connections between our local school schedule and the greater needs of the school district.


Through this workshop and time spent with my district colleagues I have been able to help our school be more proactive in setting scheduling priorities to make the best use of our shared and limited resources.


I am hopeful that as our school schedule is developed in future years, our students will benefit from the planning tools and inclusion of central office administrators in the scheduling process so that our students will continue to have access to a wide range of rich curricular offerings.

NOTE: PL & “I” Statements:

If your PL activity was approved by the LSB before the AOE “I” Statement requirements, you do not have to go back and edit them to turn them into “I” Statements. Any PL approved prior to August 2018 are grandfathered in.
