While you are receiving this, we are participating in a wonderful Mater Dei tradition - we are taking the Christmas Card pic! What a way to start our day!
Action Items:
We are in the home stretch for A Knight on the Town 2023! Please sell the raffle tickets you received at Final Registration. All proceeds from A Knight on the Town support scholarships for our students. We are working to make this event a huge success because we know the need is great and we are eager to make Catholic education a possibility for all who want it! If you need more tickets, we have them and can send them home! Raffle tickets are due by noon on Monday, October 2, 2023.

We are double booked with Bingo and A Knight on the Town! It is a no homework day and our teams are not playing, so maybe you will have some time to help out! We are so excited for the re-opening of the Mater Dei Assumption Church! The towers have been taken down, and the first round of heavy duty cleaning has been accomplished (boy did we generate some dust)! We have work days scheduled this week and weekend so that our beautiful Church is ready to welcome our guests on October 8! Please click here to sign up to help with the cleaning. This is a wonderful opportunity for service hours for our Confirmation students and our AlumKnights who need some hours!

Counselor’s Corner:
Encourage excellence by setting high, achievable expectations
There are two important things to consider when setting expectations for your student :
1. Research shows that students tend to live up to parent and teacher expectations, whether they are high or low. So it’s important to set the bar high for your child.
2. Expectations should be realistic. If only near-perfection satisfies you, your child may think, “What’s the point?” and stop trying altogether.
To set expectations that are high, realistic and effective, keep these guidelines in mind:
Expect your child’s best efforts in all activities.
Gear your expectations to your individual child. Avoid comparisons to siblings, classmates and others.
Praise effort and progress. Express pride in your child, and remind your child to take pride in working hard.
Show interest in what interests your child. Parents’ support for their children’s passions can motivate kids to try their best in all pursuits.
Be a role model. Set high expectations for yourself and talk about how you plan to meet them. Let your child see you give your best effort.

You should receive your first “snapshot” of the year, with an update of Bingo hours, lunch charges, and After Care charges via email today. Please review your snapshot and make sure that your records match ours.
We will send the Mid-Quarter Grades for the 1st Quarter home with your student today. We are proud of the work our Knights are doing and appreciate all that you do to support our school! If you have any questions about your student’s progress, please contact the teacher. For our students in grades 3-8, grades are “live” all the time, so please take the opportunity to check grades regularly with your student.

There is a Virtus Training Session at Christ the King at 10:00 AM. All volunteers who work with our students MUST be Virtus trained. To register, please click here. Then choose “First Time Registrant” down the left navigation menu. We are in the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. Please allow approximately 30 minutes to complete the registration process, as it includes authorization for your background check and reading our Child Protection Policy. It is also easier to complete the process on a computer so that you can access a full size screen.

(1) TONIGHT, Tuesday, September 12, is our Room Parent Meeting at 6:30 in the cafeteria! If you signed up to be a room parent (or even if you didn't sign up, but you would like to help), plan to attend and we will share the schedule of events for the year. 8th Grade Parents, we are also hosting your first planning meeting right after the room parent meeting.
(2) TONIGHT, Tuesday, September 12, is our Eat and Earn Tuesday at Chipotle on Wanamaker! If you have Chipotle provide your dinner, Mater Dei receives a portion of the proceeds!
(3) We are having a Cub Scout Pack Meeting Thursday, September 14, at 6:00 in the Cafeteria.

We will first begin with some financial reminders:
Tuition payments are paid through FACTS.
Lunch payments are paid to the office. Lunch accounts should be paid in advance.
After Care payments can be paid through FACTS or to the office:
If your child attends our after care 4-5 days each week, we offer a level pay option. It is $144/month per child. We bill those accounts through FACTS and the payments are due on the last day of each month, September through May.
If your child attends our after care on a drop in or occasional basis, please pay to the office when you receive your bill.
We will email the first After Care bills today. If you receive one and you are planning to pay through your FACTS account, please email Mrs. Hillebert and we will confirm your monthly payments in FACTS. If you do not receive a bill and your child has attended after care, our records indicate that you are using FACTS.

There is a Virtus Training Session at Christ the King at 10:00 AM. All volunteers who work with our students MUST be Virtus trained. To register, please click here. Then choose “First Time Registrant” down the left navigation menu. We are in the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. Please allow approximately 30 minutes to complete the registration process, as it includes authorization for your background check and reading our Child Protection Policy. It is also easier to complete the process on a computer so that you can access a full size screen.

Overreacting to an outburst adds fuel to the fire. Instead, make it clear that pleading and tantrums won’t change your mind. To reduce frustration, give your child a sense of power by offering choices that will ultimately get the task finished. Say things like, “You can finish your report before or after dinner. It’s your decision.”

May I just take this opportunity to say that your children are absolutely crushing this whole back to school thing! They are already working hard and we are so proud of them! And a tip of the hat to you, too! It is a real commitment to be a Mater Dei parent and we appreciate you!
On behalf of the Mater Dei PTO, thank you to everyone who made time to join us for the Back to School Bash last night!
Congratulations to the Mater Dei Drumline, on their performance at the Overland Park Convention Center Thursday! We love our Drumline and so many other people do as well - they receive numerous requests to perform at fundraisers and community events. They are making an impact AND representing our school in an amazing way!
Yesterday was so busy and so many of our families were representing Mater Dei in different ways - Back to School Bash, Drumline, Saints Football - EVERYONE has a dress down day on Tuesday, September 5! Please wear appropriate shirts and pants/shorts.
Dress Down Guidelines! Shirts must be short or long-sleeved (no tank tops, or spaghetti straps); any wording on T-shirts should be school appropriate. Jeans should have no holes; shorts - let’s talk length - the length of the shorts should be past your child’s fingertips when his/her arms are relaxed at his/her sides; leggings - leggings are very comfortable, but not altogether modest. If your child wears leggings, the shirt must extend past the tips of the fingertips when arms are relaxed at their sides (same rule as the shorts). As in all matters of dress code, the administration reserves the right to determine appropriate implementation of the guidelines. Failure to meet expectations will result in losing the privilege for the next dress down day.
