Good Morning!
Thank you to everyone who helped to make our Catholic Schools Week Kick Off Celebration simply fantastic! I heard so many positive comments about the Mass that our students prepared! And the food was delicious! It was a wonderful way to kick off Catholic Schools Week for our whole parish family!
Thank you to everyone who wrote a letter to a teacher or member of the staff. We are so excited to share those tomorrow! If you would still like to send a note, you are not too late!
Today is our Day of Prayer and I hope you have been able to follow us on social media! At 2:30, in the Church, our 7th and 8th graders will lead our Confirmation Prayer Service.
Here are some Action Items to keep you occupied in between our moments of prayer!
Parent Teacher Conferences are February 14-15. Please click here to reserve your time.
Students in grades PK-2 will have assigned times to meet with homeroom teachers
Teachers for grades 3-7 will be available in the gym. Parents will sign up for a block of time to visit with teachers. We limit the number of people who can reserve each block to hopefully lessen the wait time to visit with teachers.
Students in grade 6 and 7 are required to attend their conferences because they lead the conversation.
Students in grades 3-5 are encouraged to attend their conferences and to be part of this important conversation.
8th graders do not have to attend the spring conferences because we will be in contact with you as your student selects classes for their freshman year in high school. 8th grade parents are - of course - welcome to attend conferences!
Grade K-4 have volunteered to provide meals for the teachers during conferences. Please check your email for a Signup Genius link. Thank you so much!
Spirit Wear - we have had quite a demand to open the spirit wear store and the PTO is answering your request! Please click here to order from our local vendor, Reliant Apparel. Orders will be accepted until February 18 and delivered right after Spring Break!
Daddy Daughter Dance Info! The Daddy Daughter Dance will be held on Saturday, February 17, from 6:00 - 8:00 in the Mater Dei Event Center!
We have a new theme for this year and it is “Decades.” Each Daddy/Daughter can represent their favorite decade! We’ll see all our “groovy,” “far out,” and “totally rad” escorts, accompanying our “dancing queens.” See the flier below for all the details!

Hey, Knights, thank you for volunteering to help with Mass this afternoon! I know our parishioners love to participate in Mass prepared by our students!
Re-enrollment for the 2024 - 2025 school year will begin Monday, February 5! We are so grateful that you have chosen Mater Dei and we hope to have everyone back next year (except those amazing 8th graders!)
If we are rolling those 8th graders out, it must be time to welcome some new Kindergarten students! Our Kindergarten Round Up is Tuesday, February 20! Please click here to sign up for Round Up. If you know someone who is interested in learning more or attending Kindergarten Round Up, please share the link or it is on the front page of our website!
Parent-Teacher Conferences are Wednesday, February 14 - Thursday, February 15. Sign up will be sent home in Tuesday’s School Messenger.
And, a reminder: as we approach Valentine’s Day, only our PK-5 graders will celebrate. This year, Valentine’s Day falls on Ash Wednesday, so we will host our parties on Mardi Gras. If you choose to send Valentines, please send one for every student in the class.
A second reminder: per our Handbook: if you are distributing invitations at school for an event, please include every member of the class OR every boy/girl. If you need to limit the size of your event, please use a different avenue for distributing your invitations. While we understand that some events need to be smaller in size, we can avoid hurt feelings by asking via email, phone call, or even “snail mail.”

Catholic Schools Week - MVP Day! This is a very special day at Mater Dei!
Students may wear their uniforms or DRESS UP! No jeans, please!
Students may invite grandparents, aunts, uncles, adult neighbors, or siblings. This is a day to celebrate the people who support our students in so many ways! We recognize the “village” that helps inspire our students!
We will begin with Mass, prepared by the 5th Grade, at 8:00 in the Mater Dei Holy Name Church. Mass will include blessing of the throats after the homily. Students may sit with their guests.
After Mass, please remain in the church and enjoy a short concert by our students.
After Mass and the “mini” concert, we invite everyone to the Mater Dei Event Center, just west of the Church. We will have donuts, juice, and coffee.
We will share our Catholic Schools Week Video AND we have some more entertainment.
We will dismiss at 10:30 from the Event Center. There is no after care on this day.
Family Fun Night at Hayden! We will be there and we want you to be there, too! Please see the flier for details!

We are kicking off Catholic Schools Week tomorrow, Saturday, January 27! The flier for the week is attached to this email and will also be available in the bulletin this weekend.
If you are looking to begin with some MD Basketball, our C Flight plays at 9:00 and our A Flight plays at 10:00. Both teams play at Most Pure Heart!
We are preparing the Mass for 5:00 PM on Saturday, January 27!
If your student volunteered to help with Mass, please arrive at Church at 4:45. Students should wear nice clothes, but don't have to completely "dress up."
After Mass, our 8th grade are hosting a Mexican Food Fundraiser in the Mater Dei Event Center. The proceeds will be used for 8th grade graduation activities.

Good Afternoon, Knights!
Thank you for your flexibility while we tried the delayed start today! I will send a form to get some feedback on that later this week.
For now, I have just four quick items!
(1) Please consider joining us and allowing your student to help with our Catholic Schools Week Kick Off Mass. You as parents contribute so much of your time, talent, and treasure, and I appreciate you. But the fact is that without the help we receive from our parish family, we would not have a school. It is reasonable and right to recognize the important contribution of our parishioners as we kick off Catholic Schools Week. Only 6% of our families have responded. We can do better, Knights! (2) Today is the last day to pre-order burritos from our 8th graders. Please see the flier below!
(3) The Spelling Bee is this Thursday, January 25! I apologize for not including this in the 10 Day Forecast - these snow days have me off my game! The Bee will begin at 1:45 in the Gym.
(4) Attention, parents of students in grades 5-8! We are celebrating Mass with the Archbishop on Thursday, January 25! A permission slip was sent home last week. Dress Code Reminders for this Mass: Boys must wear long pants and uniform top, PTO Sweatshirts are acceptable. Girls may wear long pants with a uniform top, PTO sweatshirts are acceptable. Girls may also wear: skirts, skorts, shorts, as long as they have solid-colored tights, leggings, or knee socks in one of the following colors: blue, white, red, gray, black, or brown.

1-16-2024 Two Water Bottles and Awards!
Good Afternoon!
School is in session during the Boil Water Advisory!
Please send your student with 2 filled water bottles. Our bottle fillers will not be used until the advisory is lifted. We do not have enough water bottles to provide every student with water throughout the day. At home, you should bring water to a boil and let it boil for one minute. Then let the water cool and then fill water bottles. This is a process, so please allow enough time to prepare 2 water bottles for each student.
Tomorrow, January 17, all are invited to Mass at 8:00 AM. Immediately after Mass, we are hosting our First Semester Awards Assembly for grades K-8. All are welcome to join us!

1-15-2024 No School and Water Advisory
Good Afternoon, Knights,
Due to extreme cold temperatures, there is no school tomorrow, January 16. We make this determination in conjunction with the public schools in Shawnee County and we take very seriously the impact this has on our families.
For Wednesday, please send your student with 2 filled water bottles. Please use boiled water that has cooled to fill these bottles in advance. We have drained our ice machines and we will not allow anyone to use our bottle fillers until the boil advisory is lifted. It is critical that you send 2 water bottles so that your student has access to water all day. In our building, we have water for using the restrooms, and hand washing, although we will then ask students to use a hand sanitizer, which we will provide. Our kitchen has sanitization sinks, so we anticipate no impact to lunch.
And finally, all Topeka Parochial League games scheduled for tonight, Monday, January 15, will be rescheduled. None of our teams were scheduled to play, but I wanted to make you aware of the change.

Appropriate pants or shorts include: jeans with no holes in them, capris, shorts that extend past the tips of the fingertips AND below any shirt that is being worn; leggings ONLY IF they are worn with a shirt that comes past the end of the fingertips; pajama pants are not appropriate spirit day attire (we will host a pajama day during Catholic Schools Week). As with all matters related to the dress code, the administration reserves the right to determine appropriate implementation of the policy.

Action Items:
Bingo for tonight, January 8, 2024, is canceled due to the weather!
All Mater Dei Families are expected to work three Bingo shifts over the course of the year. Please click here to sign up to work Bingo.
All families must have one of their sessions worked by January 29, 2024. Any family who has not worked one Bingo session by January 29 will be assessed $100 through FACTS on February 5, 2024.
First Semester Awards Assembly - Wednesday, January 10, 2024
We are excited to recognize the hard work that our students did in the first semester of this year!
All are welcome at our All School Mass at 8:00 AM (prepared by the 7th graders)
The Awards Assembly will begin immediately after Mass, which we believe will be approximately 8:40 AM.
Snow Day Procedures
Catholic Schools make a “snow day” determination as a group and in conjunction with the Shawnee County public school districts. Mater Dei does not make the decision as an individual school
If we cancel school, you will receive a phone call through our School Messenger System. This phone call will come from the school phone number (785-233-1727). You will also receive an email and it will be posted on our social media. It will be listed on both ksnt and wibw. It will be in ALL the places, Knights!
If the school is closed due to weather, then our Mater Dei Child Care Center and the Mater Dei Parish Office will also be closed for the day.
If we are closed for the day, all Topeka Parochial League Games will be canceled and then rescheduled.
We do not dismiss early when the weather is inclement. If your work closes early and you want to pick up your student, you are welcome to do so. Our elementary students do not drive, so if we are in school, we will stay here on the regular schedule and you can come at the regular time or when you are released from work.

Catholic Schools Week - save the dates for January 27 - February 2, when we celebrate Catholic Schools Week! Details will be included in the School Messenger on Thursday, January 11.

Mater Dei Child Care Center has an opening for a Lead Teacher! The Child Care Center is such a fun and encouraging place! If you are interested in learning more, please contact Ms. Virginia at 785-232-1603
Mater Dei School has a part time janitor position available. Working hours are 3:00 - 6:00 Monday through Friday. This is a wonderful opportunity for someone in high school or college because there is plenty of time to study and to attend school or campus events. It is also a good second job for those who are just interested in a few hours each week!
