Syllabi Best Practices

Per the Faculty Appendix, all faculty are required to upload a current syllabus to their sections in Blackboard and make their sections available to students. Faculty must upload a syllabus to each semester course section’s SYLLABUS area. This consistency in course design ensures that students can easily locate syllabi and that the college’s analytic reports correctly count the presence of syllabi in active sections.

Creating a Syllabus

Faculty should use the latest version of the Center for Teaching Excellence’s Syllabus Templates approved to develop syllabi for their courses. We strongly recommend including your current contact information and Student Support Hours to the syllabus.

The templates are available through Google Docs; you may download a template as a Word file or copy it into Google Docs for editing.

Sharing a Syllabus in Blackboard

See these instructions for adding a Syllabus to your Ultra Course.

Syllabus Addenda

By default, the following addenda are included in your Ultra Course template's Syllabus area. If you lose them, you can add them back by sharing them as links.

Creating a Syllabus Receipt Assessment

To verify that students have received and read your syllabus, create a Syllabus Receipt Assessment for students to complete. This creates an electronic time-stamped receipt that you and your students can view at any time. If desired, you may create a custom Grade Schema for assigning Complete/Incomplete grade to the syllabus receipt assessment instead of assigning a numeric grade.
