2023 THEME: PREPARING STUDENTS TO BECOME
CRITICAL CONSUMERS OF INFORMATION AND LEARNING
Students must be critical consumers of information and learning because it helps them develop essential skills for academic and personal success.
Developing critical thinking skills: When students learn to evaluate information and sources critically, they become better at thinking critically. This skill is essential for academic success, as well as in their personal and professional lives.
Avoiding misinformation: In today's world, there is a lot of misinformation and fake news. Critical thinking skills can help students distinguish between trustworthy sources of information and those that are not.
Promoting curiosity: Being a critical consumer of information encourages students to ask questions and seek out information. This can lead to a more thorough understanding of a topic and a greater curiosity about the world around them.
Preparing for future academic and career success: In college and in the workplace, students will be expected to research and analyze information. By learning to be critical consumers of information and learning, they will be better prepared for these challenges.
Overall, being a critical consumer of information and learning is an important skill for students to develop. It helps them to become better thinkers, avoid misinformation, promote curiosity, and prepare for future academic and career success.

Our goal for this fall’s three-day statewide conference is to bring fellow educators together to explore the myriad ways we, as Social Studies teachers, are making connections between the curriculum and the community. The conference’s objective serves to highlight the creative and exciting methods teachers use to bring our discipline into the lives of students.
The workshops and sessions offered in this conference will give educators a chance to collaborate with their peers and demonstrate how they take Social Studies beyond the classroom. Those collaborative efforts may be with a museum, library, non-profit company, or another classroom in your school. By whatever means you achieve this goal, we at the Massachusetts Council for the Social Studies, along with our many regional partners, look forward to celebrating your successes and promoting your accomplishments, productive citizens, which requires a rich knowledge of their nation’s history.
