The Roxbury Sunflower Project (RSP), founded by CACP’s own Ekua Holmes, hosted the End of Season Garden Party at the Freedom House. This event celebrated another successful year of community, art, and resilience. Now in its seventh year, the project continues to transform vacant spaces into sunflower fields, symbolizing resilience and self determination across Boston.
This year’s Garden Party featured community tables, face painting and art making with sparc! the ArtMobile, as well as local food and refreshments. Attendees enjoyed teddy bear and children’s book giveaways, fostering joy and connection. As the first recipient of the Fern Cunningham-Terry (FCT) Memorial Fund, Heily experienced a transformative month in Ghana, where she participated in a sustainable fashion and textile artist residency.
During her 32-day immersion into the rich Ghanaian culture, she explored traditional crafts such as kente cloth weaving, batiking, and basket weaving, while also gaining insights into the pressing textile waste crisis in the Kantamanto market. With stories of friendship, creativity, and environmental advocacy, Heily will share how her experiences have deepened her understanding of the impact of small actions in making the world a better place.

We are thrilled to announce that on September 25th, a new postal stamp was unveiled nationwide—and it was designed by none other than our very own Ekua Holmes, Director of sparc! the Artmobile!
Ekua’s stunning design for the 2024 Kwanzaa stamp, issued by the United States Postal Service, was inspired by a live performance she witnessed at the OrigiNation Cultural Arts Center. The vibrant digital collage features three young performers: a drummer and two dancers. The artwork beautifully captures the energy and spirit of youth, while symbolizing the continuation of African American cultural traditions through the lens of Kwanzaa’s seven principles—unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.
We are beyond excited for Ekua and this well-deserved honor. Be sure to grab a sheet of these remarkable stamps! You can purchase them HERE.

Join us for the Roxbury Sunflower Project's end of season Garden Party, celebrating another year of growth and community! Now in its seventh year, the Roxbury Sunflower Project, founded by artist Ekua Holmes (Director of CACP's sparc! the ArtMobile), has become a beloved multi-site public artwork embraced by growers throughout Boston. Initially created to bring beauty and hope to Ekua's lifelong neighborhood of Roxbury, the project emphasizes resilience, community, and transformation.
One of the key sites is a large lot in Grove Hall at the corner of Warren and Crawford Streets. Since acquiring the lot in June 2023, Madison Park Development Corporation (MPDC) has supported its ongoing use for the project while exploring future plans for affordable housing and retail development.
This year’s Garden Party will feature Old School Hip Hop and R&B music by DJ Kitzner, art-making activities with sparc! the ArtMobile, community resource tables, locally sourced refreshments, and children’s book and teddy bear giveaways. MPDC will also provide an update on the site’s future development.
The Garden Party is a collaboration between the Roxbury Sunflower Project, sparc! the Artmobile, United Neighbors of Lower Roxbury Community Garden, Friends of Martin’s Park, Speak for the Trees, Madison Park Development Corporation, and the Rose Kennedy Greenway.

AUGUST SPOTLIGHT
Late last month one of our partners - the Mission Hill Neighborhood Housing Services (MHNHS) - celebrated its 50th anniversary and hosted a big ole neighborhood party, to which over 200 residents attended!
As part of the event, t-shirts were distributed and CACP is honored to have played a role in the design of this commemorative T. As part of her work with CACP, cohort member Kiana Cintron (Illustration, ‘27), worked throughout the spring term with MHNHS staff to design a series of logos for the 50th celebration. All parties were delighted with this collaboration and the designs that were produced.
Kiana had this to say about the experience: “Working with MHNHS allowed me to put my art practice to the test. Not only was it an opportunity to learn about how art impacts a community but it also allowed me to learn more about collaboration between an artist and their client. CACP allowed me to connect to the nearby community and share my artistic experiences to assist them in their 50th-anniversary project.”
Our partners at MHNHS had this to say about the experience:
“Kiana was an absolute gem to work with!! She listened to our ideas, tested out some concepts, and ultimately gave us something much better than what we could have hoped for!! We liked her designs so much that they became the basis, not just for our commemorative T-shirts, but also for our hats and the Annual Meeting program books! All of us at MHNHS are extremely appreciative of MassArt’s willingness to partner with us in support of this event and to sponsor Kiana’s time spent working with us. A true collaboration that really does help to “build community in Mission Hill.”
We wish MHNHS a very happy birthday and are grateful to work alongside them in this beautiful neighborhood of ours!
MHNHS is a community-based nonprofit housing and economic development organization committed to the revitalization and stabilization of the Mission Hill neighborhood. MHNHS especially works to improve the standard of living of Mission Hill’s lower-income residents through the development and maintenance of stable, decent, and affordable housing for low- and moderate-income people.

"The Roxbury Sunflower Project, now in its 7th year, celebrates the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston by distributing—free of charge—10,000 sunflower seeds to anyone who wishes to plant and care for them.
“Sunflowers represent resilience, inner beauty, self-determination and the ability for this community to evolve and emerge while staying deeply grounded in its history and traditions.
"From an ecological standpoint, sunflowers provide multiple levels of nourishment for the earth, both above and below ground: their blooms are supreme pollinators, attracting both bees and butterflies, while their deep roots draw toxins from damaged soil. Sunflowers symbolize the hardiness of Roxbury and make a compelling emblem for our community. The sunflowers' essential attributes mirror those that are reflected in the cultural traditions of Roxbury's Black community and must now be collectively amplified in our society."

Juneteenth is the oldest known observance commemorating the end of slavery in the United States dating back to 1865. 2024 marks Juneteenth’s 4th year as an official MA state holiday. As our country continues to reckon with the history of slavery and the many ways racial injustice continues today, Juneteenth is a day to celebrate, honor our ancestors, and reflect on what freedom and belonging mean to us.
This celebration is hosted annually on June 19th by the Boston Juneteenth Committee and the Museum of the National Center of Afro American Artists (NCAAA) and includes a parade, music, community vendors, refreshments, award presentations, and Keynote Speaker Michael Curry.

The MassArt Art Museum (MAAM)’s newest exhibition Displacement opens later this month! Displacement, an exhibition of works by contemporary artists, explores the relationship between humans and their environments.
Through textiles, sculptures, film, and scents, this exhibition examines human-driven alterations to the sea, land, and air, and the ways in which those systems are responding.
By investigating the historic and current relationship between industrial civilization and the natural world, a range of issues are called into the frame, including migration, adaptation, and extinction. The visual languages of the artists in Displacement offer a lens through which the arc of human-environmental dynamics can be assessed and reconsidered.

DS4SI’s mission is to partner with communities, artists, and social justice practitioners–you!–to imagine, demonstrate, and collectively rebuild places to be more just and vibrant. When we say “more just and vibrant”, we mean aesthetic justice for all.
This semester, we are deepening our collective study of aesthetic justice. We believe that communities of color have long been asked to live in other people’s spatial imaginaries. Now is the time to engage BIPOC communities as co-designers of new community infrastructures. We’ll be sharing ds4si’s new aesthetic justice manifesto at the opening.
It will be an evening of delicious food, engaging activities, the rejoining of friends, and signing up for our spring semester courses!

You Belong Here
This exhibition brings together the work of two distinct yet connected artists who explore labor, language, culture, and identity through their work.
Ceci Méndez-Ortiz’s work is a labor of love, and a practice of patience. She has collected and recycled mailed business (aka ‘security’) envelopes since 1995, and to date has found hundreds of unique intricate prints in myriad colors and patterns. Fascinated by these objects designed to ostensibly obscure the private information lurking within, their use is imbued with tremendous social meaning related to issues of identity, privacy, ownership, worth, consumption, possession, and control. She slices, arranges, overlays, and weaves the patterns into pieces to create visual worlds evocative of textiles and textures, as well as personal journeys, maps, and landscapes. Website: www.palabraproductions.com
Chandra Dieppa Méndez-Ortiz engages with historical and personal narratives, discarded materials, color, and mark making through a series of inter-related works on paper and canvas, to illustrate and connect nonlinear histories, memories, and places. Méndez-Ortiz is in conversation with a history of mark making, drawing, painting and collage while combining the personal, historical and the contemporary in order to honor, learn from and reimagine the ways in which people of color, particularly Black and Latino people have navigated and contributed to American life. FEBRUARY SPOTLIGHT
Thanks to the groundbreaking efforts of Dr. Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), we learn about the contributions of people of African descent in universities and many K-12 schools. Black History isn't just confined to textbooks; it's shared and celebrated in documentaries, local and national museums, literature, visual arts, music and beyond.
Black History Month isn't just a symbolic nod; it's a special time for acknowledgment, reflection, and inspiration. It's an ongoing celebration, echoing the legacy of Carter G. Woodson, who championed racial pride and emphasized the significance of the Black experience in the American story.
In 1915, recognizing the lack of information on Black achievements, Dr. Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, now ASALH. And, as part of this work, initiated Negro History Week, aligning it with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. In 1976, this week expanded to the full month of February. Today, Black History Month enjoys nationwide support, fostering discussions on the black experience among people of all backgrounds.

An evening of poetry and art with best selling author Renée Watson and local fine artist Ekua Holmes from Black Girl You Are Atlas. The event will include Q&A and a book signing.
In this semi-autobiographical collection of poems, Renée Watson writes about her experience growing up as a young Black girl at the intersections of race, class, and gender. Using a variety of poetic forms, from haiku to free verse, Watson shares recollections of her childhood in Portland, tender odes to the Black women in her life, and urgent calls for Black girls to step into their power.
Black Girl You Are Atlas encourages young readers to embrace their future with a strong sense of sisterhood and celebration. With full-color art by fine artist Ekua Holmes which also celebrates the journeys of Black girls, this collection offers guidance and is a gift for anyone who reads it.

REMEMBERING
Irvienne Goldson, creator of Healthy Visions, an ABCD community event that invited people of all ages to be encouraged, motivated, and informed while creating personal and family vision boards every January. Irvienne wanted us to kick off the year knowing we could make our dreams come true with a “healthy vision.”
“Frequently recognized for her work with under-resourced people of color, particularly girls and young women, Irvienne was a woman of vision, determination, and action. Her heart was immense, her impact immeasurable. We will miss her always.”
— John Drew, former President and CEO, ABCD

Fern Cunningham-Terry, creator of several monumental works of public art such as "Rise" in Mattapan Square, "The Sentinel" at Forest Hills Cemetery, and "Step on Board," the memorial to Harriet Tubman in the South End, devoted her life and her talent to communities in and around Boston. As a lifelong artist and educator for over 30 years, Fern’s message to the youth of Boston was a message of inclusion: she wanted children of color to know that they are beautiful and worthy of seeing themselves in art. In 2021 an endowed fund dedicated to youth arts was established in Fern’s name by family and friends.
If you wish to donate to The Fern Cunningham-Terry Memorial Fund click here. Every gift — large and small will benefit youth art programs and scholarships throughout Boston’s neighborhoods! All donations are tax deductible.
CELEBRATING
This fall Greater Grove Hall Main Streets (GGHMS), installed the Black Women Lead Project which features portraits of 212 exceptional Black women from all walks of life and from the 1700s to the present displayed on banners along Blue Hill Avenue. The portrait display runs for over 2 miles! Executive Director, Ed Gaskin says, “the project extends beyond honoring just the most powerful, the most influential, most well-known. A major part of the mission is to show the younger generation that “no matter what career path you pick, there has already been a Black woman who has succeeded and done that.”
Eighty of the 200+ honorees are still living and attended a celebration at the MA State House's Hall of Flags, which marked the largest gathering of Black female leaders ever to be honored at the State House at one time. Many of these women promote the arts as a catalyst for community building, self expression, entrepreneurship and healing. Artists, L’Merchie Frazier, Ekua Holmes and Fern Cunningham-Terry use their gifts as image makers to inspire and uplift, Mimi Jones, now deceased was a long time activist and supporter of CACP, and well-known Icons such as Elma Lewis, Ruth Batson, and Melnea Cass, who while no longer with us continue to serve as an example of “doing for self,” innovating and accomplishing small things in a great way.”

CACP’s Isabelle Higgins is featured in New New England, a new exhibition in Steven Zevitas Gallery at SoWa. This show also features work from MassArt's Hannah Rust (Painting Undergraduate '23) and Sandrea Lovelock-Williams (MFA Student).
"Each painting in New New England features a central figure, but the subjects’ environments, facture, and histories differ radically. Collectively, they demonstrate the breadth of psychic states the human figure can conjure in painting. Papay Solomon examines the divide between heritage and adopted culture; Ji Zou explores NSFW content and digital identity; Hannah Rust opens the door to magical thinking in a time of climate catastrophe; Isabelle Higgins dwells on the comfort of seeing a friendly face after a long day; and Sandrea Lovelock Williams invites us to join a celebration of life for a loved-one lost."

Celebrate the life of the extraordinary civil and human rights activist Coretta Scott King with this picture book adaptation of her critically acclaimed adult memoir. This book is illustrated by CACP's own Ekua Holmes!
This book “offers a new generation the remarkable story of the activist, artist, wife, and mother whose grace in the face of unspeakable loss continued the momentum of a movement.”
“Holmes’s vibrant illustrations (in acrylic with elements of collage incorporating print and photos) saturate the pages with color. The illustrations also take great care in communicating the very human emotions that King and her family experienced in scenes including her surrounded by her young children at the piano; a phone receiver hanging from its cord at the news of MLK’s death; and her speaking to a crowd just hours after arriving in Memphis despite her grief. Reynolds (the author) and Holmes (the illustrator) bring this civil rights icon to life, reminding readers of a dream yet to be fully realized.”
