NOVEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Clay For Change - Haley House
We recently welcomed our Haley House partners to the MassArt ceramics studios to make Souper Bowls with us! We had so much fun building relationships and skills!
The Souper Bowl collaboration between MassArt and Haley House has been going strong for the past 13 years. This labor of love supports Haley House’s food justice and housing justice programs including their soup kitchen in the South End.
MassArt‘s Ceramics Area and the Clay For Change student group are key partners in this collaboration. Each fall, leading up to Haley House’s Souper Bowl fundraising event, hundreds of unique ceramic bowls are handmade in the MassArt ceramics studios. Then, at the event in Feb, attendees select a bowl, sample a variety of delicious soups made by chefs in the Haley House community, and take home their treasured bowl.
For the past 13 years, CACP has worked with our partners to deepen the Souper Bowl collaboration between Haley House and MassArt. We love this collaboration and we hope you all join us for the Souper Bowl event on Feb 18, 2024 at the Roxbury Innovation Center!

OCTOBER SPOTLIGHT
The Makanda Jazz Project / sparc! the ArtMobile / First Church in Roxbury
Saturday, September 9th was a joyous day of music and painting with sparc! the ArtMobile and The Makanda Project on the lawn of the First Church in Roxbury. Concert-goers celebrated the birthday of “Makanda” Ken McIntyre and the sparc! team welcomed concert-goers to listen to the band and paint whatever came to their mind. From pointillism, to abstraction and nature, we loved seeing all the creative ways the canvases were transformed.
Owen (Massart ‘25), a third year sparc! team member spent the afternoon live painting the event! He captured the warm, buzzing energy of the event until the first drops of rain fell.
Thank you to all who came by and the Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry for hosting Jazz on the Green!

Roxbury has a deeply rich history of artistic and cultural contributions that reaches back to the early 19th century to the present including notables in music, visual arts, literature, theater, dance. This year, local artists - Napoleon Jones-Henderson, Cyrille Conan, and Ekua Holmes - will open their homes for art lovers.
Roxbury Open Studios began in 1999 as part of the Roxbury Art Series of ACT Roxbury (Arts, Culture, Trade), a program of Madison Park Development Corporation. ACT Roxbury used arts & cultural initiatives to foster the physical, economic and social revitalization of Roxbury. It was one of 12 programs originally funded by the Mass. Cultural Council in 1998 for their then new Cultural Economic Development Initiative and the only one funded in a predominantly African-American community.
Roxbury Open Studios Collaborative is an artist-run collaborative focused on Roxbury Open Studios and providing vehicles for artists of Roxbury, information about exhibitions, economic and skills advancement workshops, and other services that help elevate the rich artistic and cultural assets of Roxbury.

Many thanks to our guest artists: Genaro “Go Five” Ortega, Napoleon Jones-Henderson, and Cedric "Vise1" Douglas.
The Neighborhood Art Tour was co-created by MassArt’s Justice Equity and Transformation office and the Center for Art and Community Partnerships and supported by Student Development. Click below for a digital copy!

The MassArt Museum (MAAM) is currently installing a new exhibition so stay tuned for the opening early next month!
The Myth of Normal: A Celebration of Authentic Expression looks at social and emotional norms that have been codified over our collective past. Focusing on the achievements and creative abundance of MassArt’s alumni, this exhibition is guest-curated by Mari Spirito ‘92 in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the college.
This exhibition takes inspiration from Dr. Gabor Maté and Daniel Matés's 2022 book of the same title, which looks at the importance of authentic expression as a means to heal. Spirito argues through this exhibition that art plays a pivotal role in overall wellness, as an avenue and language for self-expression.
MAAM is always free and open to all!
