This year, sparc! was proud to host two inspiring Silver Sessions workshop series for community members ages 55+. Across the fall and spring sessions, participants came together at the Shaw-Roxbury Branch of the Boston Public Library to explore portraiture, storytelling, and creative self-expression through a wide range of artistic techniques led by talented MassArt-affiliated teaching artists.
Participants experimented with watercolor, contour drawing, monotype printing, charcoal, and collage, creating deeply personal artworks that reflected their voices, memories, and lived experiences. Along the way, Silver Sessions became more than an art workshop series — they became spaces for reflection, creativity, and meaningful community connection.
We invite you to watch this beautiful video produced by Praxis Collaborative Media, which captures the spirit of the workshops and highlights the creativity, joy, and stories shared by participants. It was especially meaningful to collaborate on the project with Praxis Lead Producer Stephanie Houten, a MassArt alum and former member of the CACP cohort.
We are grateful to Boston’s Age Strong Commission for supporting these meaningful arts experiences for older adults.

“Juneteenth forces us to revisit our history and remember the price paid for our freedoms even as we remember that the struggle goes on,” says Barry Gaither, Director Emeritus of the NCAAA. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865 when General George Gordon Granger read General Order #3 in Galveston, Texas, which informed the enslaved that they were henceforth free. General Order #3 completed the process of emancipation begun with President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. Upon learning that they were no longer in bondage, spontaneous celebrations erupted amongst the newly freed men and women, and thus the basis for Juneteenth was laid.
“Honoring and celebrating one’s culture is not an option,” says Jumaada A-K.H. Smith, chairperson of the Boston Juneteenth Committee. “We must increase knowledge, enhance and enrich our understanding of US history and thus ensure that it reflects the contributions of all people,” she emphasizes. “It is about the children, all children, even those to come. It is only fair to expose them to truth, life, and historic education. One way to do this is by participating in and attending events such as the Juneteenth Emancipation Observance. I hope you’ll join us this Juneteenth for a beautiful and meaningful day.”
In addition to the keynote address, the Observance features the reading aloud of General Order #3, the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution, as well as the bestowal of the Ralph F. Browne Jr. Juneteenth Incentive awards given to people who have demonstrated exemplary civic engagement and social activism. Other fun activities such as dance demonstrations, drumming, face-painting and an Open Air Art Studio hosted by MassArt’s sparc! the ArtMobile with our newly painted van adds creativity, color and vitality to the day.
Roxbury Community College & Everywhere!
The sparc! ArtMobile team recently reinstalled our Chain Link Gallery featuring Sobek's artwork at Roxbury Community College. Now on view along Columbus Avenue at the corner of Cedar Street, the installation transforms a highly visible public space into a gallery that celebrates neighborhood stories, community pride, and the lived experiences that shape Sobek's practice. As the banners went up, passersby stopped to admire the work and even offered enthusiastic honks of approval.
At the same time, Sobek's artistic vision is traveling across Boston through the exterior wrap he created for sparc! the ArtMobile. Together, the Chain Link Gallery and the ArtMobile extend the reach of Sobek's art—one rooted in place, the other moving through neighborhoods with an invitation to engage!
We're proud to share Sobek's work in these new ways and grateful for the opportunity to invite connection, reflection, and pride in our many communities.

Liberty Tree Plaza (Across the street from the Chinatown T Stop)
Join CACP’s own Ivy Wong in a free printmaking workshop inspired by her vinyl wrapped kiosk installation across from the Chinatown T Stop. Learn how to design colorful abstract works with the shapes and textures of found objects! Open to all ages.
This piece is inspired by local artist Wen Ti Tsen’s “Chinatown Worker Statues” project, which memorializes the restaurant worker, garment worker, laundryman, and grandmother in bronze to commemorate and pay tribute to workers who performed historically essential labor that provided livelihood in the Chinese immigrant community. The items printed in this design are objects used by these workers, as physical representations of everyday care expressed in this community, both past and present. A bamboo steamer, a ball of twine, fruit mesh, incense, grains of rice, bamboo leaves, woven cloth, a frog button, a piece of embroidery. Through these references to simple cultural acts of sharing food, mending clothing, offering fruit or incense at an altar - Ivy illustrates that anyone is capable of care, and even small gestures are significant. The humble items included in this piece - cheap, commonplace, and often overlooked - can be powerful vessels and tools of care.

This semester, the CACP student cohort spent time learning about Boston’s Latin Quarter in Jamaica Plain through art, storytelling, and community perspectives.
Students began by engaging with a documentary and discussions that introduced the neighborhood’s history, with a focus on youth leadership and community organizing. They also had the opportunity to learn from artist, educator and MassArt alum Ja’Hari Ortega (‘21), who shared insights into their creative work and connection to culture and place.
The experience concluded with a guided neighborhood tour led by community partners, including representatives from Hyde Square Task Force, City Life/Vida Urbana, the Connolly Branch of the Boston Public Library, and musician Cornell Coley. The visit ended with a shared meal at Miami Restaurant.
Together, these experiences offered students a meaningful introduction to the histories, cultural richness, and ongoing community work that shape the Latin Quarter.

Be sure to grab a Kid’s Kit for the young gardeners in your life, get creative with sparc! the ArtMobile team, and join a poetry workshop with Roxbury poets Toni Bee and Lisa Lee.

We’re excited to share the CACP Lookbook, a visual and narrative reflection of the people, partnerships, and creative work that shape the Center for Art and Community Partnerships at MassArt.
The Lookbook offers a window into how our work comes to life across neighborhoods — through relationships built over time, shared creative practice, and deep collaboration with community partners, students, faculty, and staff. More than a record of programs or events, it captures the spirit of how we work: grounded in care, reciprocity, and collective imagination.
Inside, you’ll find stories and images from across our core programs — including PartnershipWORKS, sparc! the ArtMobile, Community-Engaged Coursework, and Special Collaborations — highlighting moments of learning, joy, and connection. The Lookbook centers the wisdom of community partners, the creativity of MassArt students, and the shared commitment that makes this work possible.
We created the Lookbook as both a celebration and an invitation: a way to honor the relationships that sustain our work, and to welcome new collaborators into our creative ecosystem. Whether you’re a longtime partner or just getting to know CACP, we hope it offers a sense of what’s possible when art and design are rooted in relationship and shared purpose.
We’re so grateful to everyone who helped bring this Lookbook to life — and to all of you who continue to imagine, build, and create alongside us.
Check out CACP's Lookbook here!

The Fern Cunningham-Terry Memorial Fund for Youth is pleased to announce the awarding of eight scholarships to local youth artists to participate in MassArt’s Saturday Studios program. Now in its 95th year, Saturday Studios serves learners in grades 3–12, offering a fun and supportive space to explore artistic passions while building skills, connections, and confidence.
Each semester, the program welcomes approximately 150 youth into the MassArt community. These scholarships help ensure that young people from Boston communities can access this enriching, artful learning experience. The fund is administered through sparc! the ArtMobile, a program of MassArt’s Center for Art and Community Partnerships (CACP).
Fern Cunningham-Terry devoted her life to creating monumental bronze sculptures of Black people—especially children—ensuring they would be seen, honored, and represented in Boston’s urban landscape. Her work celebrates youth, family, history, and culture, while affirming the transformative power of creativity.
Established by Fern’s family, friends, and colleagues, the Fern Cunningham-Terry Memorial Fund is the first MassArt endowed fund named for a local Black woman artist.
The youth awarded these scholarships demonstrate a strong interest in art as a tool for identity-building, social justice, and civic engagement. Fern’s 1972 work The Value of a Life, located at Jeep Jones Park in Roxbury, reflects her lifelong commitment to youth enrichment and creative opportunity—values embodied by these awards.

Throughout the night, aerialists from Boston Circus Guild perform gravity-defying stunts suspended above Paine Gallery while live figure drawing models serve as inspiration for sketching alongside Makaso Miki’s colorful wool-felted forms.
Get creative with quirky projects in the Barkan Family Big Ideas Studio, enjoy a galactic-inspired mocktail that sparkles like the night sky, and don’t miss a special screening of the critically-acclaimed 2001 animated feature Spirited Away by Studio Ghibli sensation Hayao Miyazaki.
There’s nothing quite like MassArt’s Ceramics Studio on SOUPER Bowl Making Day—tables full of clay, wheels humming, and a shared sense of purpose. Each year, CACP partners with the Clay for Change student group and our friends at Haley House to handcraft bowls for the annual Souper Bowl fundraiser, supporting their long-standing work in food and housing justice.
This year felt especially meaningful. In honor of Haley House’s 60th anniversary, we set an ambitious goal: 400 handmade bowls for the 18th Annual Souper Bowl in February. Seasoned ceramicists and first-time makers rolled up their sleeves, learning from one another and finding joy in the creative process.
CACP is proud to support this ongoing collaboration, where creative practice meets community and justice. We look forward to celebrating with Haley House next month!

We’re excited to share two national recognitions that highlight the depth and impact of community engagement at MassArt—one honoring the institution as a whole, and the other recognizing the leadership and work of the Center for Art and Community Partnerships (CACP) and sparc! the ArtMobile!
Earlier this month, MassArt received the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement, one of the highest national distinctions recognizing colleges and universities for institution-wide commitment to reciprocal community partnership. Of the 237 institutions receiving the Classification nationwide, MassArt is the only independent art and design college to receive the designation—affirming the College’s distinctive role in advancing the public good through art, design, and community-engaged practice. The classification is valid through 2032.
Alongside this institutional milestone, the CACP team and sparc! the ArtMobile were selected as one of five national recipients of Campus Compact’s Excellence in Civic and Community Engagement Programming Award. This honor recognizes outstanding program-level models that create deep and lasting impact. The award affirms sparc!’s place-based, mobile approach—rooted in listening, co-creation, and meeting communities where they are—creating accessible, intergenerational spaces where art fosters connection, wellbeing, and shared ownership. This recognition reflects the collective efforts of the full CACP team and our many community partners.
We are deeply grateful for the continued support of MassArt’s leadership and collaborators who make this work possible. Together, these recognitions underscore both MassArt’s institutional commitment to community engagement and the care, creativity, and collaboration that bring that commitment to life through programs like sparc!.
