Dear CACP Community,
Each fall offers a chance to pause, reflect, and begin again. At the heart of our work is a commitment to community, creativity, and care. Every gathering and encounter holds the possibility of connection—the chance to imagine, build, and create side by side. In these shared moments, we find renewal.
As the world feels heavy with conflict and change, we are reminded how much we need one another. This season, we step forward with gratitude—for you, for our communities, and for the power of art and design to nurture hope and belonging.
With warmth, Your friends at CACP

Now in its eighth year, artist Ekua Holmes’ Roxbury Sunflower Project is a multi-site public artwork consisting of sunflower installations growing throughout the City of Boston. What began through the Now + There Artist Accelerator Fellowship has blossomed into a citywide artwork, with sunflowers transforming public spaces throughout the historically Black Boston neighborhood where Holmes has called home since childhood.
Like sunflowers that follow the sun’s path across the sky, Holmes believes communities can turn toward the light, grow strong, and remain deeply rooted in history and tradition. She envisioned these values blossoming in a once-vacant lot in Grove Hall at Warren and Crawford Streets, now a joyful gathering place for neighbors and passersby.
In June 2023, Madison Park Development Corporation acquired the lot and continues to support its use for the Roxbury Sunflower Project while exploring future development of affordable housing and retail.
Original collaborators include United Neighbors of Lower Roxbury, Friends of Martins Park, The Greenway, Freedom House, Grove Hall Branch of the Boston Public Library, Speak for the Trees, and MassArt’s Center for Art and Community Partnerships.

sparc! the ArtMobile was proud to participate in the 15th Annual Juneteenth Emancipation Observance Celebration on June 19th in Roxbury, hosted at the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists. The day was filled with powerful moments of community, creativity, and reflection.
From the flag-raising ceremony and parade to an afternoon of music, performances, conversation, and collaborative artmaking, the celebration honored the legacy of Juneteenth and the continued fight for Black freedom and liberation. At the sparc! station, attendees of all ages painted on a collaborative painting that envisioned freedom. We also crafted personal Juneteenth-themed zines, and decorated freedom quilt coloring sheets. These activities invited participants to reflect on the meaning of the day while sharing joy and creativity across generations.
It was a day of deep connection—rooted in history, uplifted by art, and carried forward by community. As we commemorate Juneteenth each year, we are reminded that the work of liberation continues—and that art is one of our most powerful tools for imagining and building a more just future.

Meet Yanelis, a rising senior at MassArt majoring in Printmaking and a valued member of our PartnershipWORKS cohort since 2023. This spring, Yanelis brought her talent and enthusiasm to one of our cherished community partners, Sociedad Latina, supporting their vibrant Saturday Music Classes.
Sociedad Latina has been a cornerstone of our Mission Hill community for over 50 years, partnering with Latine youth and families to cultivate the next generation of leaders—confident, capable, self-sustaining, and proud of their cultural heritage. Located just down Tremont Street, Sociedad Latina holds a special place in the heart of CACP as a longtime collaborator.
During her time with the Saturday Music Classes, Yanelis took on a range of roles, from documenting program activities to creating impactful print and digital materials, and building meaningful connections with families. Reflecting on her experience, Yanelis shared: "What I enjoyed most about working at Sociedad was the chance to take photos, create new connections and friendships, and engage with the kids and families."
John Slaughter, Sociedad Latina’s Saturday Music Class Coordinator, spoke highly of her contribution: "Yanelis was exceptional in her behind-the-scenes work. She consistently went above and beyond, contributing with creativity, dedication, and a strong work ethic."
We are thrilled to see our students and partners form such enriching bonds, creating lasting impacts through shared experiences and collaboration.

Join us and our own Ekua Holmes at Opening Day for this years Roxbury Sunflower Project!
The Roxbury Sunflower Project is a multi-site public artwork consisting of large-scale sunflower installations growing throughout the City of Boston from May to September. This project began as a vision of sunflowers employed to spread beauty and hope throughout the historically Black Boston neighborhood where Ekua has lived since childhood and has deep roots. All are welcome!
For Ekua, sunflowers represent resilience, inner beauty, self-determination and the ability for a community to evolve and emerge while staying deeply grounded in its history and traditions. “Sunflowers have a radiance that sustains us by inviting us to turn toward the light in all things,” she shares. Sunflowers are heliotropic plants, which means they shift and turn to follow the movement and light of the sun throughout the sky each day. Other themes of the project are planting seeds, deep roots, resilience, radiance, beauty and transformation. Learn more about the powerful meaning behind her initiative, visit The Roxbury Sunflower Project blog!
This year’s opening celebration will feature free sunflower seeds, live seedlings, artmaking with MassArt’s sparc! The ArtMobile, community resource tables, locally-sourced refreshments, and a Children’s book give-away. Partners include MassArt’s Center for Art and Community Partnerships, and Madison Park Development Corporation. Save the Date!

Originally from the Dominican Republic, Silvia is known for her bold use of color, geometric patterns, and community-driven storytelling. Her art explores the social and historical impacts on placemaking, transforming public spaces into vibrant reflections of culture and connection.
She says, “what excites me most is that I’m creating this artwork for the people of Boston as an opportunity to connect to each other; to increase new positive experiences, dialogue, and create a deeper sense of belonging with their city.” Content is often determined through a collective, neighborhood-based community process, which she considers part of her social practice.

Dear Beloved CACP Community,
I hope this finds you well, and that you are cultivating spaces of joy, creativity, and care. CACP’s artful community-based work feels more vital than ever as our communities navigate uncertainty and rapid change. Through our work, we seek to foster spaces where all voices are heard and valued, and where art and design become powerful tools for connection, reflection, and resistance.
I’m writing today to share important news about the CACP team and to reflect on the journey that has brought us here. As some of you know, our beloved Ceci Méndez-Ortiz recently stepped down from her role as Executive Director of CACP after fourteen extraordinary years of leadership. Ceci’s heartful vision, profound generosity, and deep commitment to fostering relationships and meaningful connections have shaped CACP into the vibrant center you know today. Her commitment to lead with love, to listen deeply to one another, is reflected in the vibrant community work we do together.
MassArt holds a unique place as the only state-funded, stand-alone art and design college in the country, and CACP is proud of how we bring MassArt’s public mission to life. The CACP team, with Ceci’s leadership, has developed values, practices, and programs that center community-building, creative collaboration, and cultures of care. The relationships we’ve built with individuals and organizations over the years continue to inspire and guide us. They are the lifeblood of CACP as we move into the future. We are profoundly grateful to Ceci for her brilliant vision, and for her abundantly generous spirit. She will be deeply missed.
Celebrating Ceci at MassArt (selfie by Ceci!)
As Ceci moves into a new phase—focusing on her family, her art practice, and continuing her leadership of the Radical Imagination for Racial Justice (RIRJ) initiative—she shared:
“It’s been a beautiful privilege to embody [CACP's] core values of Love, Generosity, and Listening as we've co-created truly transformative partnerships over the years. I cherish our collaborations and friendships rooted in creative expression and community wellbeing, and I look forward to taking part in all that CACP and our communities abundantly offer!”
I’m honored and humbled to take on the role of Director. Having worked alongside Ceci and our Associate Director, Ekua Holmes, for the past fourteen years, I’ve experienced the power of shared leadership and the magic that happens when we trust and learn from one another. Our team has become like family, rooted in collaboration, care, and mutual respect. I carry these lessons forward with deep gratitude.
Today, CACP’s work is thriving thanks to the dedication and brilliance of our amazing team: Ekua Holmes (‘77), who directs sparc! the ArtMobile; Isabelle Higgins (‘19), sparc! Program Manager; Ivy Wong, CACP Office Manager and Program Coordinator; and Chelsea Akers (‘24), our Graphic Designer and Marketing Assistant. Together, we’re a small but mighty team! CACP as always, continues to prioritize relationships, create cultures of care, and belief in the power of art and design to help us build a more just and loving world. As we embrace this new chapter, we are filled with gratitude for you—our community partners, collaborators, and supporters. Your dedication, creativity, and shared vision inspire us every day.
Thank you for being part of this journey with us. We look forward to continuing our work together, dreaming big, and building a brighter future through the arts and community connections.
With gratitude and hope,
Elena Belle White

CACP’s sparc! the ArtMobile partnered with local artist and current MassArt MFA candidate Magda Léon for the first Chain Link Gallery installation of the season! Her work “The In-Between World: The Art of Magda Leon” was recently installed on Columbus Avenue near Roxbury Community College. Léon’s printmaking, installation, and social practice art, centers on her bicultural heritage as a Guatemalan-American. These works and poetic expressions illuminate the immigrant experience.
Keep an eye out for the next Chain Link Gallery installation in the neighborhood, featuring Silvia López Chavez.

Future Fossils presents a possible future view of the present, a moment frozen in time and culture. The artworks—imagined relics—come from artists based in North America, Latin America, and Europe. While each artist explores different paths and issues, together, their works suggest the remains of an apocalypse. Offering a snapshot of how we live today, Future Fossils reveals aspects of our lives left behind for later generations to decode.
