Chapter 6: Add and Subtract Fractions with Unlike Denominators

5.NF.A.1 - Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators.

5.NF.A.2 - Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers.

Chapter 6 Vocabulary

  • common denominator - a denominator that is the same in two or more fractions.

  • denominator - the number below the bar in a fraction that tells how many equal parts are in the whole or in the group

  • equivalent fractions - fractions that have the same value

  • numerator - the part of a fraction above the line, which tells how many parts are being counted

  • common multiple - a number that is a multiple of two or more numbers

  • difference - the answer to a subtraction problem

  • mixed number - a number made up of a whole number and fraction

  • simplest form - the lowest form of a fraction

PSA: This chapter requires students to use information they learned in the third and fourth grade. Many students need a refresher with this material in order to be successful in Chapter 3. I have included a "Prerequisite Section" that will give students a quick recap of these concepts.
