Second Semester 25-26 Credit Flex Application is now OPEN! Deadline to apply is by 11:59pm on DECEMBER 1st!
Students may take an online course through an outside provider with control over the time, place, and pace of their learning. Students are responsible for researching and selecting an online course they wish to take. After submitting an application, students will receive an email stating whether or not the plan was approved.
PLEASE READ THIS PAGE COMPLETELY BEFORE SUBMITTING A CREDIT FLEX APPLICATION FOR AN ONLINE COURSE.
PLEASE ALSO READ ALL INFORMATION IN THE CREDIT FLEXIBILITY HANDBOOK.
ACCREDITED PROVIDERS ONLY
Online courses must be taken through an accredited institution. The provider must be able to issue an OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT showing both the grade earned and the credit awarded upon completion.
Below is a list of examples of online providers that have been approved in the past for some courses. This list is not exhaustive and applicants are free to research other providers as well.
Brigham Young University (BYU) High School Independent Study
APEX
Pearson Online Academy
Straighterline
Jefferson County ESC
REVIEW THE COURSE OF STUDIES AND MEET THE PREREQUISITES
Students must finish any current prerequisite course before beginning an online course.
Example: Algebra I must be completed before taking Geometry. These courses cannot be taken at the same time.
If the online course serves as a prerequisite for another class, it must be completed before a student can be scheduled into the next course in the sequence.
Example: Algebra II (online) must be completed before enrolling in Pre-Calculus at MHS.
THINK IT THROUGH AND DISCUSS WITH YOUR FAMILY
The decision to pursue credit flex is a family decision and should be student-driven. It’s important to consider how it will fit into the student’s weekly schedule and how to maintain a healthy balance with other commitments.
Before submitting an application, must be able to commit to the Credit Flex Completion Deadline.
Students are responsible for researching and selecting the online courses. However, if you have questions, please review the Credit Flex Handbook and reach out to your counselor.
STEP 2: APPLY, COMMIT, & PLAN AHEAD
SUBMIT THE CREDIT FLEX APPLICATION ONLINE
Submit the Credit Flex Application within the Application timeframe.
Students will need to provide specific information regarding the course they plan to take, credit they expect to earn, and a link to the online syllabus.
It is important students submit the application from their MHS email account- not their personal account.
WAIT FOR THE OKAY
BEFORE YOU PAY
All costs related to online courses—including tuition, textbooks, and any exam proctoring fees—are the responsibility of the student/applicant.
Do not purchase or register for a course until your Credit Flex plan has been officially approved by Mr. Powell.
Students will receive an email indicating if the course was approved or not within 2 weeks after they submit the Credit Flex Application.
BE AWARE OF
COMPLETION DEADLINES
MHS Credit Flex due date supersedes any online terms of agreement. For example, if an online provider states that the course remains active for a year, that does not mean you have a year to complete the course. The course must be completed according to the terms of the credit flex application.
Plan Ahead: We recommend that you take the final exam at least 2-3 weeks prior to the Credit Flex Deadline to allow enough time for grading and obtaining a final transcript.
Summer Plans - Due by August 1
First Semester Plans - Due by December 1
Second Semester Plan- Due by May 1
STEP 3: SUBMIT CREDIT FLEX COMPLETION FORM
Upon completion of the course, students are required to submit the CREDIT FLEX COMPLETION FORM, and also upload the following documents BEFORE THE DEADLINE in order to receive a grade and credit:
Final Transcript provided by the Online Provider
CPR Certificate (Required for Financial Literacy only)
Grades earned through the online provider will be recorded on the Mason High School transcript exactly as reported by the online provider.
All students completing Financial Literacy through Credit Flexibility must also complete CPR/AED training and upload a copy of their certification to the Credit Flex Completion Form.
All costs related to the CPR/AED course are the responsibility of the student.
Certification is not required; students must show evidence of completion of a CPR/AED course.
Courses can be found online (Red Cross, etc.) or often times through local organizations such as the local fire department.
