In addition to our CK-12 curriculum, part of your Science grade is a partnership with The Appalachian Trail Conservancy as a participant in the Appalachian Trail Project. This project includes the care and upkeep of specific parts of the trail. Click the links below for more AT info!
Another part of your Science grade is another partnership with the United States National Phenology Network (USA-NPN). It requires data collection from specific trees on The Appalachian Trail. Each student will be assigned responsibilities regarding the recording of data when we venture out to the trail and the recording of the data in Nature's Notebook.
The USA-NPN brings together volunteer observers, government agencies, non-profit groups, educators and students of all ages to monitor the impacts of climate change on plants and animals in the United States. We monitor this impact through a program called "Nature's Notebook."
Nature's Notebook gathers information on plant and animal phenology across the U.S. to be used for decision-making on local, national and global scales to ensure the continued vitality of our environment. Since scientists alone cannot collect enough data, we help. Along with more than 15,000 other naturalists across the nation, we use scientifically-vetted observation guidelines, developed for over 1000 species, to ensure data are useful to researchers and decision-makers
