What is Individual Counseling?
I work with individual students as needed. Referrals may be initiated by teachers, parents, administration, or students.
I have a solution-based focus to counseling at school. I meet the students where they are at emotionally by validating the student’s feelings and experiences. I work with students to define the issue on the student’s mind. From there, the goal is to develop strategies to support the student’s ability to return back to class and reengage in learning. The long term goal is for students to use and develop these strategies on the student’s own.
When I I see Mrs. Melody? Mrs. Melody serves as a homeroom helper (advocate) each day; however, if students reach out to her (via email works!), they can meet with her during the homeroom time. School counselors also see students for brief 10-15 minute conversations at the request of families, staff and students during academic time. Teachers are notified of the meeting so that students’ whereabouts are accounted for. Mrs. Melody also see students during the last part of X Block.
Some of the areas I address are:
Friendships
Family transitions
