IMPORTANT NOTE: Placement into ability level ensembles is determined through an audition process. Each student’s ability to read music, technical facility and their ability to produce a characteristic tone are evaluated and are based on Director’s approval for the appropriate course offerings. For all levels of band there is an expectation for participation in rehearsals and performances outside of normal school hours, and attendance is required at these events. Students receive a full fine arts credit for band, plus a .5 PE “substitution credit” for participation in the marching band. This credit is noted as “CREDIT: 1.5 (FA 1 + PE Sub .5).” Students must be in Band for the full year in order to receive state fine arts credit. Not all of the courses listed below are offered on all campuses. Students provide their own instruments, except for those who use school owned instruments. A $75.00 Instrument Usage Fee is charged for the use of school owned instruments. All students are expected to purchase their own mouthpieces, reeds and other accessories. EXCEPTIONS: Percussionists and others who share a school-owned instrument will only be assessed $40.

A student who participates in Color Guard is eligible to receive a physical education substitution credit according to local district policy. If a student participates in an approved substitution activity as a component of a fine arts course, such as Band I as well as marching band, the student may receive the fine arts credit for the course and up to one physical education credit for participation in the approved activity. All substitution activities must meet the moderate to vigorous physical activity requirement.

The AP Music Theory Exam: This course is designed to prepare you for the AP Music Theory Exam in May. Taking the AP test is not required, although it is recommended. Section II consists of written free-response questions (45%) and sight-singing exercises (10%).
