On this slide deck below you will see the big ideas that we are focussing on in our mathematics lessons each week. You will also see which warm up activities and maths tasks are in each lesson too. We use lots of maths eyes images to help us think about all of the examples of maths when we look at an image. We focus on thinking about what we notice and what we wonder about (related to mathematics).
In our school, everyone is a "maths person" because first you need to be a person, and second you need to do maths. We foster a supportive, encouraging and challenging environment with our maths learning at Mangōnui School. Our kaiako in Kōwhai class are particularly focussed on our students having opportunities to collaboratively problem solve, utilise structured maths texts when applicable, and have many different ways to show what they know about mathematics. We have a growth mindset with mathematics and rather than saying things like "I can't do maths," I'm not good at mathematics," or "I don't know anything about this," we focus on using phrases like the ones below.
I know,,, I notice... I wonder... I think we could... My strategy is.... What do you think...
I agree because... I disagree because... I'm not sure... We could try... Can you show me another way...
Can you explain that again... I like that idea, let's try it.
We encourage whānau to have a growth mindset about mathematics too and praise your child for what they know and learn. Try using some phrases like these ones:
You might not know yet but you can keep trying. Let's practise together. You can do it!
Show me how you go that answer. What else can you try? What do you know about...?
