Nau mai, haere mai! Welcome to the Kōwhai class site for 2026!
We currently have 25 students in our class at Mangōnui School. Our class has mostly Year 4 students with a few Year 3 students too.
We have two kaiako in our class this year. Jessie Albert is our kaiako every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
Julie Newth is our kaiako every Wednesday and Friday.
Penny Lysnar is our kaimahi in Kōwhai class this year. She is in class on Monday - Thursday from 8:30 -12:30pm.
She will be supporting our kaiako and all of our tamariki during her time at school.
On this site you will find slides that show what we are learning in guided reading, shared reading, writing and mathematics each week. You will also find information about our learning in other areas of the curriculum too. You will find some of the resources we use at school, and some that you can use at home too. Our generic weekly timetable is also available so you can see what most weeks look like for us in Kōwhai class. Our term newsletters also provide more information about our class programmes.
Ngā mihi,
Jessie Albert and Julie Newth
Seesaw is an important way that we share our learning in Kōwhai class. You can share the QR code to your child's journal with as many whānau members as you like.
Reading programme We are following the Better Start Literacy Programme for our students as a part of their literacy learning. Some students will continue reading the decodable books, while others will be reading journals with various texts in them. Mrs Albert / Mrs Newth / Whaea Penny will write in the green reading logs which book / pages that children are expected to read at home each night. At this stage, children will be reading one book / text per week which specific pages outlined. Please write comments in this book about your child's reading at home. We look forward to reading them!
Library day is Friday- Students can take two books home from the library each week. We return and issue new books each week.
School lunches are provided so students only need to bring morning tea to school (unless you have opted out on the form and your child brings their own lunch too)
Contact: You can either pop in to class to speak with Mrs Albert or Mrs Newth or make contact via email, phone or Seesaw. If you have a few things to discuss then we can find an appropriate time to sit down and chat. Emails and phone numbers will be shared on our class newsletter.
