Inquiry 2024
When we learn about new and different topics we discuss them as a class. We see what we already know, what our class mates think and then discuss these points. Here is the slide where we do a lot of our class brainstorming.
Talk about any of these topics with your tamariki at home to see what they think and maybe to discuss your thinking with them on this these topics too.
Beautifying Kōwhai Garden.
We have been working to beautify the garden outside Kōwhai class. We followed the maramataka calendar to see which day would be a good time to plant. First we took out the existing plants. Then we added more dirt, planted 2 kowhai trees and replanted some old plants. We look forward to them growing so we can enjoy their yellow flowers and listen to the Tūī as they come to eat the nectar of their flowers. We had a new friend Jude who came and helped with the weeding, digging, staking and planting of our new plants. Thanks so much Jude!
Making our Waka Houora Clay sculpture
We learnt about Waka Houora. These are the waka that the early Polynesian settlers used when they were sailing around and settling new countries in the pacific ocean.
First we had a play with the clay to see what it felt like and how it worked. We practised doing sculptures and carving. Then we sketched the design we would carve onto our clay sails.
We used air drying clay to form triangles and carve our designs on them. They dried for a week. Then we chose a piece of driftwood as our waka to lash our sails to. We attached our sails using copper wire and pliers. We love our clay sculptures. Come in and have a look at our class display. Thanks to our whanau who came in to help us.
Bee Bots
We have been learning about navigation, maps and directions. We have learnt about half, quarter and whole turns. We can turn clockwise and anti-clockwise. Bee Bots are little robots that we can programme a code into to practise our turns and directions.
Making Seed Bombs
Sharee came in and talked to us about making seed bombs. They are made out of recycled paper that is turned into a pulp. We added a packet of edible seed mix. We let them dry for a week. Then we used a 'net' and made a box to take our seed bombs home in. I hope you have some nice flowers growing at your place soon.
