Director oF Student Life

From Counselor to Director of Student Life

Hello all! If I have yet to have the privilege of meeting you, my name is Keila Reyes, or as the students know me, Ms. Keila, and I am Hommock’s Director of Student Life (DSL). Before stepping into this role, I had the immense pleasure of serving as the counselor for Team 5 and as the counselor for our Dos Caminos Dual Language Program. As the DSL, I continue to support our students through their middle school journey, and ensure that there are a plethora of extracurricular activities for them to engage in.

Equity, Inclusion & Belonging

HMX added a DSL last academic school year to collaborate with our Hommocks administration, staff, students, and families to support the social, emotional, and academic goals of the school-wide community. More importantly, the role aims to assist in ensuring we are creating equitable systems for all middle school students through participating in an array of schoolwide and district wide committees such as the District Equity Team.

This year, we have enriched our already rigorous curriculum with opportunities to expand students' learning of diverse and historically excluded people, groups, and occurrences. We celebrated holidays and monthly celebrations (such as Black History Month, Women's Herstory Month, Pride Month, Lunar New Year, Juneteenth, and many others) all year long, and extended the conversations past the day/week/month that the holiday was observed.

Through morning announcements, advisory discussions, multilingual signage in our Commons, student leadership and voices group gatherings, affinity groups, and school wide celebrations, we continuously implore students to reflect on their presence in the world, in our community, and at Hommocks.

Student Leadership Groups

The role of DSL affords me the unique opportunity to support students directly through student leadership groups. In the next coming weeks and months, students will have many options to join an array of student leadership groups. These groups aim to increase opportunities for students to develop their social skills, discuss prevalent concerns and issues that affect middle school students.  Our programs are designed to engage, empower, and inspire our student body towards positive actions within our school and community!

Additional Student Support

To continue to build relationships with our diverse and vibrant student population, my visibility around the school is paramount. Currently, my office remains in the Commons ( within the AP's Office) where I am able to serve students of every team.

Students have been stopping by to converse about school, their personal and social lives, and other matters important to them. They can stop by if they need a notebook, pen, hair tie, or sticker for their water bottle: No ask is too big, nor too small for our young adults.
