Science Enrichment Course Offerings

Summer school courses are offered based on sufficient enrollment, staff availability, and/or until the class is filled. When a course is available at the student’s home school, he/she must take the course at the home school and not one of the other school buildings.

Course: Science Research Program Accelerated

Location: Maine South

Offered: Semester 2 + additional meetings throughout school year

For: 10th , 11th , 12th grade

Credit: 0.5

Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra 1 and one year of high school science or department chair approval

The science research program is an opportunity for students to investigate an area of science that they are curious about and conduct their own original research. They will be connected with a faculty advisor at school and will also be expected to find a mentor scientist from an institute of higher learning or a local business. The program begins in summer school, but in order to earn credit for the course, students are required to extend their work throughout the following school year. Over the summer, students learn about proper experimental design, develop a research question, and conduct as much research as possible under the guidance of science teachers. During the school year, students meet with teachers on a flexible basis to complete their research, summarize their results, prepare findings for presentation format, and participate in research competitions. This course is intended to be a rigorous academic enrichment opportunity for students who have a strong interest in research and are looking to explore Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) areas as a possible career path.
