Course: Consumer Education

Location: Maine East, Maine South, Maine West

For: 10th, 11th, 12th grade

Credit: 0.25

Prerequisite: None

Consumer Education covers information in the following areas: managing your money, banking, credit, and making spending decisions. This is a required course for all students except those who have taken and passed two semesters of Introduction to Business.


Course: Consumer Education Online

Location: Online w/ two in-person sessions (Maine South, Maine West, Maine East)

Offered: Semester 1

For: District 207 students in 10th, 11th, 12th grade

Credit: 0.25

Prerequisites: Access to computer/internet

This one quarter credit course will cover the following topics: savings, banking, interest, credit, taxes, insurance, investing, consumer fraud, renting vs. owning, and financing higher education. This web-based course offers students a high level of rigor with an alternative method of instruction and demands more self-direction than the traditional classroom experience. Therefore, students enrolling in this course are expected to have a high level of computer literacy and familiarity with Microsoft Office and file management operations. All assignments will be delivered via an online platform. In addition, students will use a discussion board to post responses to the class and the teacher. Students must have access to the internet daily.

The class will meet in-person on two separate scheduled days (required) to introduce new concepts, answer any questions related to previous activities, and administer the final exam. Teachers are also available during office hours from 1pm to 3pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays

This course fulfills the State of Illinois consumer education requirement. A comprehensive letter detailing class expectations will go out to all enrolled students before the class begins.
