Apply to Graduate
Students must Apply to Graduate at the start of the semester in which they plan to graduate. Click here to Apply to Graduate
Use the following timeline:
January: Apply if you plan to graduate in May.
May: Apply if you plan to graduate in August.
September: Apply if you plan to graduate in December.
Applying to graduate is required by the Registrar’s Office to officially review and process your degree completion. Please note, this process is entirely separate from the RSVP form you will receive from Brandon for the Nursing Pinning and Graduation ceremonies.
Applying to graduate triggers the Degree Review and Certification Process, where the Nursing department ensures all degree requirements are met. Once final grades are submitted:
The department reviews and certifies your completion.
The Registrar’s Office is notified.
Your degree is officially awarded, and your diploma is produced and mailed.
School of Nursing Pinning Ceremony
We hold three separate ceremonies each year:
August and December: Combined Pinning and Graduation Ceremonies. If you graduate in August or December, you are welcome to participate in the University Commencement Ceremony the following May if you wish.
May: Pinning Ceremony only. May graduates who wish to participate in a graduation ceremony can attend the University Commencement Ceremony.
RSVP and Event Details: Students will receive information about the ceremonies (including dates, locations, and invitations for family) via their @maine.edu email as the events are planned. Please check your email regularly and read all communications carefully. You will also receive an RSVP form with other important information. It is essential to complete the RSVP form by the stated deadline. If you have questions about the Nursing ceremonies, please contact Brandon Blount, brandon.blount@maine.edu. Brandon will send out save-the-dates and RSVP forms months in advance to help students plan for these events.
Latin Honors and Honors Cords
Honors status for the Nursing Pinning Ceremonies is based on your cumulative undergraduate GPA at the time of processing. This includes all grades posted to your academic record. Prior courses or degrees earned at USM will be included in a student’s cumulative GPA. For example, if a student completed 30 credits at USM, graduated from Tufts University, and then returned to USM for a second bachelor's degree, their previous USM courses would be factored into their cumulative GPA, but not the GPA from their graduation at Tufts. This policy applies university-wide and reflects best practice.
If final grades are not yet available, your honors status may be subject to change. You can review the breakdown of Latin Honors categories on the Undergraduate Academic Policies page.
