How do common definitions of depression, anxiety, ADHD, and autism harm our education systems? Stephen Tonti uses his own personal experiences to argue that mental "disorders" need to be redefined as "differences" instead, changing the language around individual student needs and therefore improving accessibility to students.
In the works of Stephen Tonti, Allison Hitt, and Jackie Grutsch McKinney there is a communal agreement that approaches to education and, specifically, tutoring, need to be reevaluated as developments in technology and our understanding of individual student needs evolve. This common discourse community that is growing throughout writing centers and educators is inspiring to see, but as acknowledged by each of these speakers, there is still much work to be done in behavioral, mental, and applicable practices. Academic resources, systematic prejudice, and privilege deficits also need to be questioned in order to create the ideal Writing Center and educational environment as a whole.
