TUTORING PHILOSOPHY

The Writing Center is a vital campus resource for students and instructors of all academic levels and disciplines, and is a continually evolving space in the context of a university. While steps have been enacted to make the Writing Center a more welcoming space for those seeking assistance, there are still ways tutors and directors within the Writing Centers can propagate this progress. In order to reconfigure student expectations of the Writing Center, tutors and directors need to analyze mental differences, work to diversify Writing Centers through inclusivity of identities and disciplines. and analyze inherent power dynamics present in the education system.

As a peer tutor, my job is to help students build confidence in their skills as writers, and in order to do so, Writing Centers and their employees need to place the individual, instead of the work, at the center of their pedagogy; only by understanding the needs of students can Writing Centers assist them in achieving their goals.

In the subpages of this tutoring philosophy you can find my expanded statements on mental differences, the diversification of Writing Centers, and the analysis of power dynamics.
