Lab Expectations

Students are expected to follow behavior, clothing, and safety expectations in order to participate in the labs. Failure to follow the expectations will result in removal from the lab or activity for the day.

REMEMBER

Students are not allowed to use equipment in the lab without supervision from an instructor.

Safety Equipment

Safety Glasses

Safety glasses are required at all times in the lab. If you choose to not wear them you will not be allowed in the lab.

Welding Helmet

Welding helmets are to be worn if you are welding. Remember safety glasses are required at all times in the lab including under your welding helmet. If you choose to not wear them you will not be allowed in the lab.

Welding gloves

Metal gets very hot and you need to protect your hands from burns and sparks.

Work Gloves

Work gloves are great for moving material especially metal because of sharp edges and splinters. You should not wear gloves while working with equipment in the woods Lab.

Proper Clothing Choices for the Lab

Jeans

Each student is expected to were jeans in the labs. Cotton sweat pants are an option that could possible be worn if needed. Below you will see some examples of what not to wear in the lab.

Why Cotton vs. Polyester?

Cotton is more durable than polyester. Polyester is also made out of plastic so it will melt when in the welding lab. Students will have to have something to cover these items up or not participate in the lab.

Jeans and leg coverings that are NOT acceptable in the lab.

Frayed Jeans

These are not the best option for working in the labs. Frays can catch fire in the welding lab.

Holes in Jeans

Holes in jeans can be dangerous in the lab. Fabric can get caught in a machine or caught on something and cause injury.

Shorts

Shorts do not provide enough protection in the lab.

Leggins

Leggins are an option in the woods lab but can cause issues in the welding lab. They are made out of polyester and sparks will burn holes into the material and possible burn your skin.

Proper Footwear

Acceptable foot wear?

Close Toed Shoes are required tennis shoes can be used but may pose an issue when welding because material on shoes are often made out of polyester. Work boots are the best solution if you have them.

Not acceptable to wear in the lab.

We should not see your toes. Not acceptable foot wear in the Lab.

Stylish but not acceptable foot wear in the Lab.

These do not have support or traction which is not acceptable.

Slippers are not acceptable in the lab.

Clothing Accessory Safety Expectations

Long hair, baggy clothes, long dangling jewelry can be dangerous in the lab because they can get stuck in a machine or caught on something in the lab and cause injury.

Behavior in the Labs

No Horse Play

Absolutely no horse play in the lab. Students will be removed from class immediately. Horseplay can pose safety issues in the labs and will not be tolerated.

No Running

There is no running in the lab. You could cause injuries or get injured yourself.

Distractions

Do not be a distraction to others using equipment. You can cause injuries not only to the person using equipment but others in the area.

What do I do if something breaks?

If equipment BREAKS, STOP and tell your INSTRUCTOR!

If a tool or piece of equipment breaks remember to stop what you are doing and tell your instructor so they can access the damage and find a solution. This also helps keep to keep a safe work environment in the lab.

Under the weather

Sick

Injured

Never operate equipment when tired, sick, injured or under the influence of drugs.

Clean up

Help ensure a safe and tidy work environment.

Tool Organization

Students must clean and return all tools to proper location after use.

Clean and Sweep up

At the end of every class each student will help clean and sweep.

Take the Garbage out

At the end of every class each garbage should be taken out.

Additional Safety Information

  • Never attempt to use equipment you have not received training on.

  • No tools are to be removed from the shop without proper authorization.

  • When carrying tools with sharper points on the end always carry with the point facing the ground.

  • Safety is your top priority when using the shop. If you are not sure what you are doing, “ASK”.
