“Teaching children how to think is more important than teaching them to be correct”
As an educator, I am highly influenced by the Reggio Emilia approach, which recognizes the profound capabilities of children and respects their unique ways of learning and expressing themselves. This philosophy has really shaped my teaching approach as well as my parenting approach with my own children.
Child-Centered Learning: In line with the Reggio Emilia philosophy, I believe that children are natural explorers, capable of constructing their own knowledge through meaningful, hands-on experiences. I am aiming to create a child-centered classroom where students are encouraged to ask questions, investigate, and express themselves through a variety of ways whether it be art, music, movement, or traditional academic subjects. As the teacher trying not to stifle that curiosity with the typical school approach,
Collaboration and Communication: The Reggio Emilia approach emphasizes the importance of collaboration, not only among students but also between students and teachers. I see myself as a co-learner and facilitator, working alongside my students to explore the world and discover answers to their questions. Through open dialogue, we can engage in rich discussions and develop a deep understanding of the subjects we explore together!
The Environment as the Third Teacher: I believe in creating a thoughtfully designed classroom environment that inspires curiosity, creativity, and exploration. In this space, materials are carefully chosen to stimulate inquiry and provoke thought, mirroring the Reggio Emilia belief that the environment is the "third teacher." We will build a community that fosters the same inspirations, one that is safe, engaging, and pushes children out of their comfort zones and into learning,
Respect for Diversity and Individuality: The Reggio Emilia approach celebrates the diversity of each child and the uniqueness of their learning journey. I am committed to fostering an inclusive classroom that respects the individuality, culture, and background of every student, ensuring that their voices are heard and valued.
In conclusion, the Reggio Emilia approach is a guiding light in my teaching and parenting philosophies. It celebrates the potential of children, emphasizes collaboration, values the learning environment, and respects diversity. By applying these principles, I will create a dynamic, nurturing, and engaging learning environment that empowers students to be active, curious, and passionate learners, capable of expressing themselves and reaching their full potential.
