Creating a strong classroom community takes time and consistent effort. By fostering an environment where students feel valued, supported, and respected, you can develop a cohesive community that enhances the overall learning experience.
The foundation of a strong classroom community is based on relationships. The ones with teacher to students, students to teacher, and peer to peer. Each needs time to cultivate, grow, and time.
To build these relationships we will first start with building a space where relationships can be fostered, and respected.
As a teacher I will build those relationships by showing genuine interest, learning about their home lives, hobbies, and goals. Learning the best ways they learn and what they might struggle with. I will hold high standards for each student and expect the best out of them instead of lowering standards and holding them less accountable although will make accommodations for those that need it.
We will build peer to peer relationships by engaging in group projects assigning class jobs that give them a sense of belonging, and if given the opportunity to be in lower elementary I will try and support my students by connecting them with buddies in a higher grade to support them in their school community.
We will build a space of positive recognition with awards, shout outs, and general recognition of good behavior along with academics. I will be showing the students an example of behaviors that create a positive community.
We will create the rules and expectations for the classroom together to build the sense of control and ownership. We will sign a document they create to hold them accountable.
As a class we won't stop with community building activities such as fun ice breakers or games at the end of the first week of school. We will use them all year to learn about each other and grow our community all year long !
