ABSTRACT OF STUDENT CASE STUDY:
After completion of my student case study, my belief that both individual and whole class classroom management is important to regulate behaviors and meet their needs. In order for students to learn as effectively as possible, it is our responsibility as teachers to be attentive to each student's behavioral and individual needs. As done in my case study, teachers need to continuously observe, collect data, make adjustments, and reflect as part of their classroom management to meet these needs of every student. I worked with a first grade student named Grape to learn more about classroom management in terms of behavior. I learned about Grape's family life, school life, and observed his behaviors in the classroom. This all helped me in creating two different behavior strategies specific to him that he could benefit from. Grape's behavioral trends were being easily distracted and needing to be constantly moving. Therefore, the behavior strategies I trialed were a secret hand signal to signify when he needed to refocus and mindfulness activities throughout the day to calm his body down. Below, I invite you to take a deeper look into Grape's case study where I touch on his family and school information, the context of his classroom, his behaviors observed, the strategies implemented, conclusions and next steps to try which can hopefully help to other teachers with students like Grape.
These commonly used hand signals for classroom management were part of my inspiration for my secret hand signal behavior strategy. For my strategy, Grape created our own original secret hand signal with me. The hand signal he chose was touching my right earring which would be used when he needed to refocus his attention from being distracted. The hand signal was secret because we were the only two that knew about it and it was not noticeable to anyone besides myself and him. This behavior strategy had success, Grape enjoyed it and even asked to continue doing the hand signal together.
