OUR CLASSROOM IS A COMMUNITY:
In our classroom, our mantra is our classroom is a community. Community building is a process that takes time and varies from individual to individual which is why I will start building it from day one of the school year. This will involve a variety of individuals including my students, their family, the classroom as a whole, and myself as the teacher. I plan to use specific practices to develop community and relationships by setting the tone, having procedures/routine/consistency, inviting students to get to know me, investing time in getting to know my students, and knowing the community I am serving. As the teacher, it will be important for me to be authentic, sincere, genuine, empathetic, and consistent yet flexible in order to create a classroom community. The practice of positive characteristics and relationships of myself and my students will help create our classroom into a community.
I believe community building in the classroom is important for a variety of reasons. One of the most significant of these reasons is that positive realtionships with students result in a positive impact on student outcomes. Another reason is that when person-centered teaching behaviors are exemplified and practiced by the teacher and other students, students learn them as well. These behaviors include responsiveness, empathy, warmth, encouragement, relatedness, and more which create a well-balanced effect on the classroom community. With using specific practices that build a positive atmosphere and relationships, my class and I can build a classroom community together. Some of the many practices we will use are getting to know the students, showing a positive demeanor, staying organized, having clear expectations, and connecting with the students' community both inside and outside of the classroom. Classroom community is something my students and I will start developing from the first day of school in order to have a class that is a safe and strongly connected environment.
This approach is for greeting and saying goodbye to students at the door in which they choose the interaction of T=touch, U=Use their name in a positive way, M=make eye contact, and/or S=Smile.
Every day we will start by meeting on the carpet for sharing time, then go over the daily schedule, classroom norms/rules, calendar, weather, and how many days of school we have had.
In the classroom, there will be a mirror that has different affirmation prompts. When each student arrives they will tell themself an affirmation in the mirror (something they will do that day) and before each student departs they will tell themself an affirmation in the mirror (something they did well that day).
Each week a new student will be chosen to be star student. The teacher will be first so students can get to know them. The star student will have special responsibilities, things they get to share, and a daily activity revolving around the student.
There will be a birthday chart representing every student's birthday. When it is a student’s birthday they will be able to bring in a treat (allergy friendly) and choose a game for the class to play or a short video for the class to watch. For students who have summer birthdays they will celebrate their half birthday. For students who do not celebrate birthdays they will get to choose a day that is their special day.
For holidays we will have a class party that consists of fun games, activities, and treats where parents/guardians are welcome to come volunteer and help. Leading up to the class party students will learn about the holiday. Students’ and their family’s beliefs will be taken into consideration.
On the first day of school, students will participate in an activity where each student chooses a color and imprints their hand on a poster in the room which will resemble and be a reminder throughout the year that we are all in this together and every student makes an important mark on the class.
Students will come up with ideas of ways to spread kindness and write them on colorful pieces of paper that will be linked together as decoration in the classroom. This will resemble how the class can be kind together and serve as a reminder to be kind everyday in the classroom.
Every time the class as a whole achieves a positive behavior goal a marble will be put in the jar. When there are no marbles left they get to choose as a class what their reward is. This will create community because the whole class is working towards the same goal together.
The teacher will have a spot in the classroom where students can write a note saying something they wish their teacher knew. The note can be signed or anonymous. This gives all students a voice in the classroom.
