I will cover how times have changed for women since the colonial times, the Industrial Revolution, to Modern times.
Women during colonial times were considered property. They owed their lives to their husbands and in return lost all economic and political rights. They were not allowed to vote, own property, or have a will if married. Few women worked and were the child caregivers for their family instead. They had to do the cooking, cleaning, sewing, and educate their kids while their husband was the provider and worked. They lost all property rights and several divorces broke out in the 1790s because of men who had deviant outbursts of drunken fits and violent rages. I find this section of the reading to be interesting because of how vastly different these times were for women compared to now. I will cover the change in my last paragraph. Needless to say, I am fortunate that women now have more opportunities.
During the Industrial Revolution, there were not many changes in gender roles when it came to their separate spheres. The men were still working however, more job opportunities were available. For instance, men could move on from being farmers and laborers and become bankers, clerks, or professionals. For this reason, land became less of a reason for marriages. Couples were now incorporating personality and compatibility into their matchmaking. However, successful marriages still involved a woman who was devoted at raising well-behaved children and had strong moral and religious convictions. These women were able to also work and many became school teachers. For poor families, these economic contributions were impossible.
In the 1970s, the sexual revolution continued. Contraceptives for child prevention were invented, and women were advocating for my freedom and liberation for their bodies. Before, abortions were dangerous to have and many women remained virgins in fear of pregnancy. Now that these resources were available to women, women were having sex more often and also getting more divorces. 50% of marriages ended in divorce because the sexual and personal freedom motivated women to leave abusive and unfulfilled marriages.
Now that women are allowed to earn an education, get a degree, and work there are more indepenent women that ever before. Wages are still not 100% equal, given men make 17% more than women combined. But compared to how little they were allowed to have since the colonial times till now, women have come a long way. I still question though whether all of these freedoms are better though. House of living is much higher now than what it used to be. For instance, rent was $4.50 a month in the 1860s and a yearly wage was $250 for farmers and up to $700 for masons. Although, men had to work 60 hours a week 6 days a week for 10 hours a day which is 20 hours less than fulltime now. With both men and women working together for a better household, it is definitely much more achievable than what it once was, yet it is still much more expensive. So sweat and hardwork is still apart of the process. One cannot complain too much, if they are willing to put in the effort. Regardless, it takes two to tango. America is still working to achieve these equal rights and help make human rights a higher priority. I am excited to be apart of a better future for America and I believe we are making those changes every day.
I feel as if these reflections have gotten easier now that I have a better idea of what is expected. I know now to give three concepts, what I have learned, and what my feedback on these concepts are. I like to provide pictures to show what I plan on talking. Also, using the internet as a source to search new material is quite interesting and educational to use. Some information you need to dig deep given that there is not as much textual evidence on the colonial times as their is for modern times like with the sexual revolution and battle of the sexes, etc. With that being said, I give myself an A for showing an understanding of what it was like for women during all of these three different timelines.
