A lot of this information was more of a review from previous courses and conversations I have had with people over time. However, the parts that were new were the specific people who were murdered due to discrimination such as Vincent Chin, an Asian American, and Matthew Sheperd who was homosexual. What was also new to me was the Melting Pot. I did not know Theodore Roosevelt made a play about that. I also was not familiar with Zoot Suits, Frito Bandito, the Capitol Crawl, and America's suspicion on Catholics. I always thought Americans disapproved of Catholicsm because of the prayer to saints and priest molestation. Not because the pope was declared to be the only one with direct communication to God.
Yes, I did notice a connection between the modules. There was a mass discrimination between all of these minorities. I also noticed most of these mistreatments were caused by the white man's power.
I found the 504, Trail of Tears, and cultural homogenization to be the most interesting. The 504 is interesting because how helpful it was been for people who have disabilities. They are offered accomodations and modifications especially in school and the work place to help them succeed. I also thought the Trail of Tears was interesting because of how far the Native Americans traveled. I sometimes felt like walking around Fresno State was my own version of the Trail of Tears. I could not imagine how much they needed to edure to travel across so much land. Lastly, cultural homogenization is interesting because anyone can experience this right outside of their bedroom window. As the saying goes birds of a feather flock together. Kids as well will experience them and this will be the start of their exploration on figuring out their own core identity as the form clusters and cliques similar to one another.
My ancestral history is half of my family on my mother's side are from Korea and on my dad's side they are from French Canada. My mom left Korea to come to America for better work opportunity because South Korea was a 3rd world country and they had not advanced in their technology and pop culture quite yet. Their food includes their staple rice, kimchi, fish, spicy pork, radishes, cucumbers, lettuce wraps, and more. French Canada is a great example of imigration because the French migrated and settled in Canada and eventually moved to America. If someone asks me what is my nationality this is always my answer. Although, I have never been to Korea, France, or Canada nor speak their language. So I identity more with American because I have been raised and born here. Yet, I will check off mix race both Asian and White on any formal paper asking.
There were several relatable experiences I identified with throughout all of these modules. I have experienced a lot of discrimination because of my age, race, gender, and disabilities throughout my life. Racism, sexism, and ageism starts very young because the education system is very competitive. It starts in elementary school even up to adulthood. For instance, I have been called yellow before. I have been called numerous names from cyclops to retarded. When you are young you think it is just how life is and people speak that way because it is funny. However, when you get older you realize it is mistreatment and someone seeing you different from what they are. The biggest one I have experienced is sexism and ableists. I used to be a linecook and strong white collared men would harass me and yell at me all day for not keeping up with them. Thanking me for not going to HR when they were being cruel or disgusting. They said several things that was considered "Back of the house" talk. I remember one time a woman who was Korean knew Spanish and the men were talking behind her back in that language and assuming she did not understand what they were saying she grabbed her things and walked out and never came back. The cultural especially in work places is very toxic and needs to be changed. I just have no way of knowing how to change it other than going somewhere else.
I learned a lot in this class. I learned through the videos, the class discussions, researching other modules, writing out my thoughts and ideas without judgement, the class activities, and lectures. What helped me most was using a narrator to help me stay focused on some of the content as he spoke me through the information. Also adding pictures to separate different concepts helped a lot. I liked that we could grade ourselves to self check our progress.
I give myself an A. I stayed focused these past few months. Life was busy, and unfortunate events occured for everyone breaking up the class flow, however we overcame them as a class and continued to push forward regardless. We all gave thurough responses and everyone was very respectful to one another. I salute all of the future educators because it not an easy field to get into.
I plan to keep these concepts and the new information with me in future discussions I have with people to break social stereotypes and discrimination. I believe people need to figure a better way to coexist with one another and build each other up instead of having an individual independent identity. We all need each other and the more people become this way the better chance humanity has at surviving. The more sociopathic we become the worse humanity is off and us empaths need to unite and break down those standards.
