I found the Zoot Suit Riots driven by the Pachuco movement to be very interesting. Zoot suits were a type of suit with excessive fabric that were popular during the Harlem Renaissance and adopted by the Mexican youth in the LA area. They had voluminous pants pegged at the ankles, a watch chain, two-toned shoes, and an oversized jacket with coat tails. They were in fashion and worn out in public, however frowned upon because of rationing laws. It is uncertain whether these riots against the Pachucos was based solely on race or because they were trying to control commodities that were scarce such as gas, food, and clothing. However, because Zoot suits were worn before the Pachuco movement, it is more suspected that this was more of a racial issue since several racial tensions broke out in violence and these people were deemed as unpatriotic and un-American.
Cesar Chavez was a social activist and humanitarian. He is known as the voice for the Farm workers. He is a great heroic figure during the civil rights movement. He founded the National Farm Workers Association in 1962. He protested against the unfair labor practices of California grape growers and people joined in marches and fasting. Dolorez Huerta was the co-founder of the NFWA. She was a labor activist and helped with the civil rights movement. She and 5000 grape growers went on strike fighting for better working conditions such as the elimination of pesticides. I think it is amazing the amount of strength and determination these people put in to gain the successes they achieved.
I think it is terrible the type of stereotypes they have put in films for adults and children. I was shocked to find out about Frito Bandito all up to what they depict in Ugly Betty. I remember my friend was a big fan of Ugly Betty growing up. There is a scene where Betty gets a publication job but later finds out she only got hired because they help their quota because she is Latino. It is upsetting that workplaces will do this just because of someone's race and not because they are qualified. Even if they are qualified, they will overlook this. In addition, Latinx people are seen as the bad guy, criminals, prostitutes, thieves, and poor in film both in early representations to modern age. Women seemed to only get roles for maids or to play the sexy Latina and the lighter their skin them more roles they got. This discrimination is not surprising but looked down on in my eyes.
I give myself an A for providing a good amount of research, devout reading, thurough digestion and comprehension of the three different concepts asked for. However, I was having diffuctly with the MLA format. I think some of the paragraphs are spaced out more than others. I do not know how to fix this. So I would dock myself for not correcting those mistakes.
