Briefly list and explain three new and/or interesting concepts you learned in this module. Reflect on why they sparked your curiosity and/or if you sought out more information.
Reflect on your commitment to the learning process. Here you should reflect on your participation, time spent on module content, the difficulty of the material, etc.
Self-assess, or in other words, give yourself a grade for the effort you gave during this module. (For example: A-, B+, C, etc.) Why do you believe this rating matches what you accomplished in this module?
Abolitionists were people that believed slavery should be eradicated during the early 1800s. They ranged from men to woman, black and white. Some famous abolitionists were William Lloyd Garrison,Harriet Beecher Stow, Harriet Tubman, and Fredrick Douglas.(Readings 3.1). William was a white abolotionist who published The Liberator. It was a newspaper about the ideals of emancipation and freedom to the public. Harriet Beecher stow wrote and published Uncle Tom's Cabin. It was a book based on a slave's life. Fredrick and Harriet Tubman were both self-educated runaway slaves. Fredrick spoke about the issues of slavery in the U.S and Harriet helped several runaway slaves hide in the North via the Underground Railroad. I commend abolitionists for their strength and bravery to risk their lives to speak on what is right and what these people deserve on behalf of all those who have been discriminated against. These people need more recognition!
In 1890 the "separate but equal" clause established thos segregation law as constituitional and was established in several southern statse (Readings 3.2). This was a case called Plessy v. Fergeson which regarded a man named Homer Plessy who was both white and black. Because of this case, lessy v. Ferguson resulted in racail segregation is the state and public places like schools, restaurants, and more. Therefore, the whites had their own school and water fountains to use and the blacks got their own. What I find interesting of this is how they call it separate but equal, however there was nothing equal about this. The whites got better schools with better quality and better education. There was a discrimination against the blacks and Homer's ancestry caused a lot of controversy. I think it was amazing that Homer who was 7/8th white chose a whites only section in a rail car. and was asked if he is colored and said yes and was asked to sit in a colored seat. He like Rosa Parks refused and was arrested. This is downright ridiculous that it created so much unnecessary havoc and for the government to get involved and pass all of these extra segregation laws.
It took nearly 58 years after Plessy. V. Ferguson for racial segregation to be ruled as unconstitutional thanks to Brown V. Board of Education. However, public facilities still held discrimination against people of color. (Readings 3.3). In the 1960, sit in protests broke out in restaurants and diners demanding to be served in white only areas. During the black civil rights movement, Martin Luther King Jr. became a famous figure and public speaker. His "I Have A Dream" speech spoke on racial equality. Him and his supporters started non violent protests for civil disobedience. Eventually the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed and all discrimination was outlawed. This is all interesting to me because of the decades long fight it took for people of color to get their equality. These people should have always had rights to be in these facilities and protests should never have started. It is devastating that this is still going on to this day after all of these years with the Black Lives Matter Movement and George Floyd protests.
I give myself an A for this assignment because I show thorough disgestion and comprehension for the readings. I provided three different concepts from the three modules and included my own opinions on why these peeked my interests. I read further articles on Plessy V. Ferguson because the reading did not give a clear account on what happened that day and I tied them all together. This assignment took a couple hours to read through the modules, find the pictures, and write out the facts and material provided in my own words. This one was the hardest of all reflections. I am behind because I have been working two jobs and school for over 5 weeks straight with only Labor Day off. I read through the modules then picked out the 3 I liked most, then went back to fill in the paragraphs a few days later. Thankfully I resigned from my other job, so my energy levels should go up again and the other modules will get easier to complete.
