Math can be expressed in many ways, including with art. The Art Showcase will feature student art which everyone can look at, appreciate, and give compliments to throughout Math Field Day.
Participants can create math-themed art in one of three categories:
Hand-created 2-D art
Technology-assisted 2-D art
Hand-created 3-D art
Examples include, but are not limited to, compass and straightedge constructions, tessellations (e.g. inspired by M.C. Escher), drawings of a geometric concept, a poem about how math makes them feel, patterns, collage, etc.
Art should be produced on a piece of paper, poster board, canvas, or other flat medium no larger than 18” x 24”.
Participants may use their choice of software including Geogebra, Desmos, or similar applications. Generative AI is not allowed.
Art should be produced on a piece of paper, poster board, canvas, or other flat medium no larger than 18” x 24”.
Examples include, but are not limited to, crochet, sculpture, paper-folding, or any medium that is not flat.
Finished art must measure no more than 2’ x 2’ x 2’.
Each participant may submit at most one artwork per category. Advisers who complete a school registration form will be provided with a link to download, fill out, print, and bring to Math Field Day a 1-page “gallery label” for each participant, including a description of the media used (e.g. pencil, markers, yarn) and the math behind the art.
(Participants or advisers who are unable to print their labels may request that we print it for them.) All art submissions and gallery labels will be turned in during registration and picked up shortly before the awards ceremony.
Art will be displayed in the exhibition room along with gallery labels, separated by category.
There will be at least one Fresno State student volunteer monitoring the room at all times. This room will be open for most of Math Field Day (apart from set-up and tear-down).
This is a non-judged event; there will be no awards given. Categories are made only for organizational purposes. There will be post-it note pads available for observers to write compliments and reflections for the artists. A space next to each art piece will be set aside for observers to place their post-it notes. Artists will get to take home their art and their post-its at the end of the Showcase.
