Any school or homeschool enrolling grades 6-12 (or below) is welcome to register for Math Field Day. The number of students each school may register is not limited, though we reserve the right to limit participation if necessary due to logistical considerations.
Math Field Day is intended for participants in grades 6-12, but all K-12 students are welcome.
Participants may compete in a contest at a higher grade level, but not a lower one. More information about contests
Top finishers in each contest will receive individual awards. Any ties will be broken at the awards ceremony. A participant involved in a tie (or at least one participant from a Leap Frog team of two) must be present at the awards ceremony to be eligible to win the tie-break.
Schools will also compete as teams. The competition is separate for high schools (grades 9-12) and middle schools (grades 8 and below). High schools will compete among other high schools in their division (Large/Medium/Small High School), and middle/elementary schools will compete among other middle/elementary schools in their division (Large/Small Middle School). Divisions may be adjusted based on the schools that participate. Top schools in each division will receive school awards.
A high school's team score is the sum of the school scores from each of the following contests: Mad Hatter 11-12, Mad Hatter 9-10, Leap Frog 11-12, Leap Frog 9-10, and Game Tournament 9-12, plus an additional 25 points if at least one student contributes art for the Art Showcase.
A middle school's team score is the sum of the school scores from each of the following contests: Mad Hatter 6-8, Leap Frog 6-8, and Game Tournament 6-8, plus an additional 25 points if at least one student contributes art for the Art Showcase.
A school's score in a contest is determined by the ranking of the top finisher from that school, relative to the ranking of the top finishers from each of the other schools with a participant entered in that contest. If n schools participate in a certain contest, then the school that finishes in the k-th place relative to the other schools shall receive 100(n-k+1)/n points for the contest.
Schools are encouraged to participate even if they do not have entrants in all contests. However, to maximize your chances of winning as a team you should try to enter at least one or two students in each contest appropriate for your school level (high or middle), and have at least one student contribute art for the Art Showcase.
