The submission deadline for Position papers is March 4th, 2026!
Position papers are formal documents submitted by Member States to outline their objectives and perspectives before negotiations begin. At HMUN, delegations have the opportunity to submit position papers for each committee where they have delegate representation. Guidelines for drafting and submitting position papers, along with details on the evaluation process, can be found below.
Before writing a position paper, delegations should research their assigned Member State, review the background materials for their committee, and conduct additional research to fully understand the topic and their country's stance. While position papers are not required to participate in HMUN or to be eligible for delegate/delegation awards, they are highly encouraged. Writing a position paper helps delegates build a strong foundation for their research and prepares them for meaningful debate. Additionally, the highest-rated position papers in each committee receive recognition and awards.
Position papers are reviewed by HMUN staff and assessed based on the following criteria:
Position – Clearly expresses the Member State’s stance on the topic, supported by relevant examples from the country or region.
Research – Demonstrates thorough analysis with references to international documents and organizations, showing a strong understanding of the issue.
Policies & Action Plan – Proposes specific actions or policies that the committee could implement, such as recommendations for Member States, international bodies, or other stakeholders.
Writing Quality – Evaluated for clarity, grammar, spelling, and overall structure. Delegates should proofread carefully before submission.
Each delegation will write their own positon paper
Each position paper must follow the provided template (provided below) which includes the following formatting requirements:
a. Paper size: 8.5x11
b. Margins: 1" on all sides
c. Font: Arial, 10 point
d. File Type: PDF
e. Single-Spaced
Must not exceed one page
Position papers represent your Member State’s official stance on a given topic and play a key role in diplomacy. Every word matters, so delegates should write professionally and avoid offensive or overly critical language toward other nations. While position papers highlight issues important to your country, they should be framed within a regional or global context to encourage collaboration rather than conflict. When writing your position paper, plan how to connect your ideas and present clear policies and actions for the committee to consider. A common structure includes:
State your country’s perspective on the topic’s background.
Explain what actions your country has taken on the issue.
Highlight past international or regional efforts related to the topic.
Propose solutions and actions you want the committee to take.
By following this structure, delegates can craft a well-organized, persuasive position paper that effectively represents their country’s views and proposed solutions.
Position papers are submitted online via the button below. A faculty member should submit all of the position papers for a delegation. If you have questions regarding position papers, please contact staff at fhsumodelun@gmail.com. Position papers are due at 11:59pm on October 3rd.
