Model United Nations offers students the opportunity to step into the role of diplomats, or "delegates," representing different countries in various UN bodies and programs. By researching global issues and adopting new perspectives, participants gain a deeper understanding of international relations and policy-making. Beyond global awareness, Model UN helps students develop essential academic and professional skills, including:
Research & Writing – Crafting well-informed position papers and resolutions
Public Speaking – Presenting arguments persuasively and confidently
Negotiation & Diplomacy – Collaborating to find solutions to complex global challenges
Our conference has three goals:
Fostering Global Awareness – Encouraging students to explore and understand the diverse nations of the world
Expanding Perspectives on Global Issues – Enhancing students' understanding of international challenges and the role of the United Nations
Developing Diplomatic and Negotiation Skills – Inspiring students to engage with international studies and the art of diplomacy
HMUN stands out as a conference that empowers delegates. With a dynamic and adaptable set of rules, a structure designed to provide varied experiences, and the incorporation of unexpected crises, we challenge participants to think critically and respond strategically. For a complete overview of our procedures and what to expect, please refer to the Delegate Handbook.
HMUN provides a platform for students to tackle pressing global issues, expand their perspectives, and develop as engaged global citizens. The conference is organized into various committees, each focused on key international topics based on real United Nations agendas. Within their assigned committees, delegates participate in:
Formal Sessions – Delivering speeches, engaging in Q&A, and following parliamentary procedures.
Informal Sessions – Collaborating in groups to negotiate solutions and draft working papers.
As delegates draft working papers, they receive feedback from conference staff to refine their proposals which is an essential part of the learning experience. Once a working paper is fully developed, it becomes a draft resolution and is put to a vote within the committee. Resolutions adopted at the committee level proceed to a plenary session, where all committees convene to review and formally adopt them as official conference outcomes.
Position papers are drafted in advance of the conference and are meant to communicate priorities to other delegations in each committee. For templates, guidelines, and aware criteria, please visit the position paper page. Position papers are due at 11:59pm on March 4th, 2026.
Our conference seeks to highlight the work of delegates and entire country delegations by offering awards, which will be presented at award night. These awards include:
Position paper awards – recognizes those delegations that submit high quality position papers
Committee awards – recognizes the work of delegates across all sessions of a committee
Delegation awards – recognizes the work by entire country delegations throughout all sessions
Delegates’ choice awards – delegates will vote for a winner of the delegates' choice awards at the end of the final committee session
