AEP 803 Educational Research (3) A study of the nature and complexities of the educational research processes. Identification and completion of any approved educational research project is a course requirement.
READ 884 Literacy Development (3) The purpose of this course is to offer opportunities to explore various perspectives of language acquisition and the development of literacy. The focus will be on exploring linguistic principles underlying language and literacy development from a psycholinguistic perspective. The format will allow students to focus on how children learn various aspects of language. The students will examine how knowledge, theory, and research influences our understanding about language and literacy instruction.
AEP 800 Innovative Technology Integration (3) AEP 800 is an exciting course that provides an in-depth examination of current technologies designed to enhance classroom instruction and candidate academic achievement. This 3-credit hour course was created for graduate candidates like you, interested in learning how to better utilize current technologies in the classroom. The course builds on basic skills and knowledge of computer applications to enhance candidate learning through integration of technology in the P-12 classroom. This course provides you with opportunities to develop your technical and pedagogical knowledge base. Using the educational technology research as a foundation, you will develop instructional materials that involve the effective use of technology in teaching and presentation.
AEP 855 Educational Leadership (3) This course will focus on research-based leadership skills and attributes. The course embraces the assumption that in order to improve learning, leaders in schools and organizations must know themselves and collaborate with others. Students will engage in a variety of activities designed to challenge leaders to work with colleagues to make decisions based on what supports individual and organizational learning. The course is learner-centered and covers current theories of leadership, teaching, and learning while discussing practical applications of these perspectives.
AEP 858 Data Analysis and Assessment (3) This course will focus on data-driven decision making for effective school leadership. Students will engage in a variety of research activities involving multiple forms of data designed to inform school and classroom practice and create a culture of collective responsibility for student learning. Students will also analyze two case studies designed to deepen their understanding of the role of a school leader in the interpretation, and reporting of data.

ESOL 882 Linguistics (3) ESOL Linguistics is intended to prepare teachers desiring ESOL endorsement with a background in the structure and function of language. This course will provide the theoretical underpinnings that allow teachers to better plan curriculum for their students. Participants will be able to determine which elements of English may be most problematic for their students, the ways in which languages may differ, and what the universal characteristics of language are. This course combines aspects of applied linguistics, psychology, and second language acquisition, as well as second language pedagogy, for increased teaching competency with second language learners.
ESOL 883 Assessment and Appraisal (3) This course is intended to prepare teachers desiring ESOL endorsement with a background in assessment that will allow them to assess and evaluate their ESOL students accurately. It will provide information, as well as considering methods of both traditional, formal assessment and nontraditional, informal assessment. Interpretation of results and their application will be considered. Major concepts and issues in language testing and assessment such as standardized testing, student portfolios, and learning assessment will be addressed.
ESOL 884 Methods and Materials (3) ESOL Methods and Materials is designed to provide pre-service and in-service teachers with an understanding of the history and methodology of teaching English to speakers of other languages, both as a foreign language and within an English-language academic setting. Future ESOL/EFL teachers will be prepared to develop the investigative, decision-making, and reflective teaching skills needed to work with English language learners of all ages, and to impart language instruction in the appropriate context. Emphasis is placed on the critical pedagogical aspects of teaching ESL/EFL, and the preparation of activities, materials, and evaluation for classroom use.
AEP 880 Cultural Diversity (3) Cultural Diversity focuses on the phenomena of cultural and ethnic variation in complex societies, and specifically within educational institutions; the nature of diversity; the nature of cultural conflicts; and how cultural differences are managed in other complex societies. This course deepens understanding of race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexual orientation as indices of diversity in human society; and heightens awareness of the challenges faced within schools to fully integrate all members of society, especially those who have been traditionally marginalized. The course is designed to develop a critical understanding, within students, of their own roles as social actors in a culturally diverse society.
ESOL 885 Practicum (3) This course is designed to relate theory to practice in a realistic setting. The student is placed in a situation to obtain experiences relating directly or indirectly to the ESOL areas being studied. 50 Practicum Hours required
