I don't have a teaching license. Does the ESOL program lead to a teaching license?
No. These are not initial teaching license programs. Instead, these programs are intended to allow you to add an endorsement to your license. For information on programs that lead to a teaching license, contact our Department of Teacher Education.
Can I transfer credits from another university?
We do accept some transfer credit. You need to be able to graduate within 8 years of the oldest course you transfer, or you will need to take the course (or the FHSU equivalent) again prior to graduation. Each course must be from an accredited institution, needs to be 3 hours credit, and must closely align with the FHSU course for which it will substitute. You must have a grade for the course (A or B only). If you would like to apply transfer credits toward your FHSU degree, contact your advisor so she can help get this process started.
Additional information regarding transfer credits can be found under “Transfer of Credit” on p. 11 and under “Time Limits” on p. 14 of the Graduate School Catalog.
Do I need to take comprehensive exams (comps)?
If you are pursuing the master's degree in education, you will need to complete comprehensive exams. See the Graduate School's Comprehensive Examinations page for more information and dates on this process. For more information regarding questions and format, click here.
When should I enroll in classes?
Follow the academic calendar to know when you are eligible to pre-enroll. Be looking for dates for pre-enrolling for Virtual College graduates. Some classes tend to fill quickly, so pre-enrolling early can be beneficial. Do not forget to finalize enrollment by paying after your adviser has approved your courses.
The course I need to enroll in next semester is not listed in TigerTracks even though the course rotation says it should be available. Will it not be offered?
The course rotation page is correct. All courses will be offered when indicated. Courses are usually not uploaded into TigerTracks until an instructor has been chosen causing some courses to be uploaded later than others. Keep checking; the courses will become available.
How do I know if the class I'm signing up for is 8-week or a 16-week course?
In TigerEnroll, when no date is given for the duration of fall or spring classes, the class is a full 16-week course. For summer classes, if no date is given for the duration of the class, it is a full 8-week course.
I just completed my pre-enrollment form. Should I contact my advisor to let her know it's ready for her approval?
There is no need to contact your advisor in this case. The system will notify her of any items needing her attention in the next 24 hours. Allow 2-3 business days for your advisor to approve your schedule.
Can I pre-enroll in classes even if I cannot pay for them right now?
Yes, pre-enroll early to secure a seat in the course. Finalize enrollment within the next few weeks. Check the academic calendar to know when this deadline is.
I forgot to finalize enrollment (pay) on time. The class I need is now full. What should I do?
You should contact your advisor for options. It is also possible to reach out to the course instructor to see if there is a possibility you could still be admitted.
I forgot to move my classes from my worksheet into my schedule, and now the classes are full. Should I put my name on a wait list?
Yes, putting your name on a wait list increases your chance of getting into the classes you want. If you still do not get into the class, you can contact your advisor or possibly the instructor to explore other possibilities. More information on how the wait list works is available through the Registrar's Office.
I've enrolled and paid for my classes; why don't I see them in BlackBoard?
Most courses are not made available in BlackBoard until the first day of class. Check the academic calendar for dates. On or after the first day of class, if you still do not see the class in BlackBoard, check your FHSU-issued e-mail @mail.fhsu.edu for communication from the instructor. If you have not received communication from the instructor, reach out to him/her.
Should I buy or rent my textbook for class?
Especially for your ESOL courses, you will want to purchase your textbooks. These are resources that you will want to turn to when preparing for comprehensive exams and the Praxis, when writing a research paper for another class, when teaching your own students, and when advising colleagues.
I don't ever get any communication from my advisor or my instructors. Is something wrong?
If you are on track, it is possible you may not receive much communication. However, you should make certain you are checking your FHSU-issued e-mail @mail.fhsu.edu regularly. Here you will receive information from your advisor, instructors, and the Graduate School as well as FHSU.
You are welcome to contact your advisor at any time; she would love to hear from you.
