Ellen Degeneres, J.K. Rowling, Shane Dawson, Lea Michelle, Matt Lauer, Kevin Spacey. These are only a few well known people that have been, what is now deemed as, "cancelled". Some have been able to keep their positions in the public eye, while others have done the unforgivable. Cancel culture is the term used to describe groups of people disregarding someone based on negative actions they have done or negative words they have said.
Although very little research has gone into the world of cancel culture, it has created debates, conversations, and movements that will impact society for years to come. It not only impacts those in the public eye but those around us as well. It is important to have an understanding in this area of the media as it has the ability and power to change people's perspective on certain situations.
This site showcases a discussion of past research that includes elements that go into cancel culture, including media framing, algorithms, and selective exposure, as well as original research through an online survey that attempts to determine what goes into the acts of canceling individuals.
