For a lot of high school students, figuring out what to do after graduation can be really overwhelming. There are college applications, scholarships, essays, and a bunch of other things that make it seem so close, yet so far. Here at Galileo, Gear Up is helping students reach those goals as efficiently as possible.
This past week was National Gear Up week, which is about a program that prepares students for college or other careers such as the military, trade school, or just the work force in general. Gear Up helps inform students about career opportunities while also giving them guidance and confidence to pursue their goals.
Galileo’s own site coordinator for Gear Up, Ms. Martin, who has been involved with the program for two years, says: “My plan is to make sure the cohort stays informed about upcoming college visits, scholarships, and all things related to college admission.”
Gear Up doesn't just provide information; it also gives students the opportunites to experience college life in person through campus tours. Visiting different colleges lets students explore possibilities and their options in a college enviroment, proving to them that it isn’t as difficult as it seems.
Ms. Martin says that her “favorite thing about Gear Up [is] interacting with the cohort and seeing how they’ve matured.”
Through college visits, scholarship applications, career guidance, and continued support, Gear Up is helping students get ready for life after high school. Having something to help you find your way on this long journey makes it a little less overwhelming.
Ms. Martin says that “Gear Up means opportunity, empowerment, and hope for the future. It is more than a program; it is a pathway that helps students recognize their potential and believe that college and career success are within their reach.”
