Introduction to Academic ESL:
Listening, Speaking, and Reading
Course Information
This course focuses on speaking and listening skills. Many of our assignments will require the use of recording video and audio, and one to one assessments that you can schedule individually. Our class content is organized in modules; there is one module for each week, and each week will cover a different topic. Our course is designed to require 10 hours of work per week.
By the end of this class, you should be able to
Use beginning academic reading and vocabulary development strategies to interpret literary and informational written texts.
Employ beginning academic listening strategies to identify main ideas and important details in lectures and discussions.
Employ beginning academic speaking strategies and vocabulary to participate in academic settings.
Identify and use college resources to support beginning academic work in listening, speaking, and Reading.
Class Meetings Via Zoom
Meetings via Zoom are optional and scheduled at the start of each semester.
Optional Scheduled Meetings
Every week: Review and Prepare (Time to be decided)
Every week, we will reflect on the topics from the week, and share our ideas from the discussion questions in the summary page of the weekly module.
Every five weeks: Self Assessment and Reflection Meetings
During weeks, 5, 10, and 16, you will have the opportunity to schedule a time to discuss your self assessment and reflection with the instructor. The schedule for choosing your appointment time will be available two weeks prior to the meetings.
