I have been activity involved in LGBTQ+ advocacy and activism for more than 20 years.  In 2010, I created the LGBT Studies program at Napa Valley College in collaboration with City College of San Francisco. I currently teach six different courses in LGBT studies. I am the appointed LGBTQ advocate for Napa Valley College and lead the LGBTQ+ Pride Learning Community.

In 2009, I created Out to Protect, a national non-profit organization that provides training on LGBTQ+ issues for law enforcement. We offer online and in-person classes designed to improve law enforcement's cultural competence around the LGBTQ+ community.  I also serve as a guest instructor at the FBI's National Academy speaking about a variety of LGBTQ+ community topics.

My other work in the field includes writing four books on LGBTQ+ issues in law enforcement, serving as the vice-president of the board for the Matthew Shepard Foundation, and hosting an LGBTQ+ news radio program on NPR station KRCB in the North Bay.

LGBT Studies Classes

A degree or certification in LGBT studies supports the work of educators, health care and emergency medical professionals, criminal justice professions, human services professions, business professionals, and those seeking work in the hospitality industry.  Knowledge about sexual orientation and gender identity minorities is essential for anyone working in in a job that engages with other people.

Many students take LGBT studies courses to better understand themselves and their community. Whether you are part of the community or an ally, all students are welcome in our classes.
