Sample Discussion Page

The discussion section in Canvas is an important part of this course. This is where we build community and practice sharing mathematical ideas with others, which are skills that will support you for the rest of your lives. It is important that you give your very best effort here. The minimum requirement is one post, but I hope that many of you participate more than this. This is a great place to get help on the days when we're not in person.

You can either do an initial post or a response post. Either way, I expect your post to be substantial and adhere to the following expectations:

For an Initial Post, begin a discussion thread by doing one of the following:

Remember to always start with the assignment name, the problem number, and the problem itself, so your classmates can easily search through the thread. Also, you will not receive credit if you don't show your work. I expect to see calculations written out and at least a short explanation in every single post.

For a Response Post, expand the discussion by replying to a classmate's post. Responses may include:

Your response posts must include discussion of mathematical ideas. Responses such as "Thanks for showing your solution. This really helped me!" or "I like the way you organized your answer" will not receive full credit. You are expected to share your perspective about the mathematics, and if I don't see your calculations, you won't receive full credit.

You may type your responses into the discussion, you may utilize the Math Equation editor, or you may include a photo of your work. To embed an image into the discussion, click on the image icon above the text box, choose "Upload Image," and select the image you want to upload from your computer. You can then resize the image if it's too big.

Your post is due by Friday at 11:59pm, but I would really appreciate it if students participated earlier in the week, so we have a robust discussion. Also, the discussion is open until Sunday night, so students may contribute on Saturday or Sunday. If you wait until Saturday or Sunday for your first post, you will receive partial credit.
