Sample Discussion Page
The discussion section in Canvas is one of the most important parts of this course. This is where we build community and practice sharing mathematical ideas with others, which are skills that will support you for the rest of your lives. This is also where we demonstrate our problem-solving approaches and show our calculations, which is how we learn from each other. It is important that you give your very best effort here. The minimum requirement is one original post and two responses, but I hope that many of you participate more than this. The more we discuss, the more we learn!
For your Initial Post due by Wednesday at 11:59pm (PT), begin a discussion thread by doing one of the following:
Post a fully-solved homework problem, with each step and a full explanation written out, to provide a helpful example for your classmates.
Post a partially-solved homework problem, with some steps and an explanation written out, and ask for help from your classmates.
Post a fully-solved homework problem with a mistake in it for other students to find. Clearly label that it's a "find the mistake" problem and make sure that your steps are clear enough that the mistake can be identified.
Remember to always start with the assignment name, the problem number, and the problem itself, so your classmates can easily search through the thread. Also, you will not receive credit for posting the answer to a multiple-choice problem, as many of these do not involve showing work. I expect to see calculations written out in every single post.
For your Responses due by Saturday at 11:59pm (PT), expand the discussion by replying to at least 2 classmates' posts. Responses may include:
Answering a question another student asked
Demonstrating a different way to solve a problem
Sharing a mistake that you made to help other students avoid making the same mistake
Writing out some of the steps if the original post skipped some steps
Providing additional insight about the solution to a problem
Respectfully correcting a mistake that a student made
Your response posts must include discussion of mathematical ideas. Responses such as "Thanks for showing your solution. This really helped me!" or "I like the way you organized your answer" will not receive full credit. You are expected to share your perspective about the mathematics, and if I don't see your calculations, you won't receive full credit.
You may type your responses into the discussion, you may utilize the Math Equation editor, or you may include a photo of your work. To embed an image into the discussion, click on the image icon above the text box, choose "Upload Image," and select the image you want to upload from your computer. You can then resize the image if it's too big.
