This fully online course will provide an opportunity for students to explore the teaching profession as a career. We will begin by learning the history of the formal education system, teacher training and teacher roles in the United States. We will discuss current issues in education including teaching job opportunities/challenges, the testing/standards movement, school funding and the politics of persistent inequities and child-advocacy/activism within the school system. Teacher quality and self-assessment will be explored within this context. We will explore the developmental needs of school-aged children, learning styles and the role of schools in supporting child growth and development. Finally, students will learn about California state requirements for teaching, educational preparation and steps to securing a teaching position in an elementary, middle or high school setting.

• January 16, 2024 course begins (online only) and runs through May 22, 2024

• February 2, 2024 Last day to drop credit classes without a “W”, no notation will appear on the student’s permanent record. *Last day to submit Late Add P Petitions* 

• April 8-14, 2024 Spring Recess
